Compensation: $130,000–$165,000 annually, plus performance-based bonus

Schedule: Full-time, primarily Monday through Friday, with project-related travel and field support as required

Work Arrangement: Opportunity for a hybrid schedule after 90 days

About Coastal Engineering

Coastal Engineering is a Veteran-Owned Small Business specializing in marine construction, commercial diving, dredging, and engineering services. We deliver complex waterfront and underwater infrastructure projects throughout the East Coast.

We are expanding our in-house engineering capabilities and seeking an experienced, hands-on Professional Engineer to help establish the technical foundation of our Marine Engineering Division. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with construction and diving professionals to develop practical, safe, and constructible engineering solutions.

Position Summary

The Senior Marine and Waterfront Engineer will perform and oversee engineering work involving the evaluation, design, rehabilitation, and construction support of marine and waterfront infrastructure. The successful candidate will be capable of independently developing calculations, reports, plans, specifications, and repair recommendations while collaborating closely with Coastal’s executive leadership, project managers, field personnel, clients, and specialty consultants.

This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to help expand Coastal’s engineering capabilities, establish technical standards, and influence how engineering services are integrated with our field operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform structural evaluations, engineering analyses, calculations, condition assessments, and repair designs.
• Prepare and review engineering reports, technical memoranda, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and construction documents.
• Develop rehabilitation, reinforcement, replacement, and repair recommendations for existing infrastructure.
• Provide engineering support during inspections, estimating, pre-construction, and active construction.
• Evaluate alternatives based on constructability, durability, safety, cost, schedule, and long-term performance.
• Conduct site visits and support field investigations, including waterfront and underwater inspection projects.
• Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, contractors, subcontractors, and specialty consultants.
• Establish engineering templates, technical standards, design procedures, and quality-control processes.
• Serve as Engineer of Record and sign and seal engineering deliverables when qualified and authorized.
• Support projects involving piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, bridges, dams, docks, marinas, pile-supported structures, marine foundations, fender systems, and other waterfront infrastructure.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Marine, Coastal Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Active Professional Engineer license.
• Approximately 7–10 or more years of relevant engineering experience.
• Experience with marine, waterfront, structural, coastal, bridge, dam, or heavy-civil infrastructure.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare and review engineering calculations, reports, plans, specifications, and construction documents.
• Working knowledge of structural systems, foundations, marine materials, deterioration mechanisms, and rehabilitation methods.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to independently manage technical assignments while collaborating with multidisciplinary project and field teams.
• Willingness to travel to project sites and support field investigations and construction activities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active PE license in New York or New Jersey, or the ability to obtain licensure promptly through comity.
• Experience with waterfront rehabilitation, underwater inspections, bulkheads, piers, wharves, dams, bridges, fender systems, or marine foundations.
• Experience working with USACE, NAVFAC, state transportation agencies, port authorities, or municipal waterfront agencies.
• Experience providing engineering support directly to marine contractors or construction teams.
• Familiarity with federal and state design requirements and permitting processes.
