Aquatics Head Coach

Position Overview This classification has been designated as a non-benefited, non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position. The City of Mesa is currently recruiting Aquatics Head Coaches for the Summer Season (April 2026 through August 2026). Applicants may also be considered for year-round positions. Responsibilities As an Aquatics Head Coach, you will coach, mentor, and train techniques related to swim teams, artistic swimming teams, dive teams, or water polo teams, as well as junior lifeguard programs. You will develop the skills of athletes and volunteers, supervise participants, take corrective action as needed, and recruit volunteers assigning them to work matches, meets, and events. Other duties include monitoring activities at public pools to prevent accidents, rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, checking pool water chemistry, cash handling, and general cleaning duties. You may be scheduled for lifeguard and/or swim lesson instructor assignments. Skills Testing & Application Process Qualified applicants must successfully complete one skills test. The first Skills Test will be offered on Saturday, March 21, 2026, and remaining staffing needs will be filled at a second Skills Test on Saturday, April 4, 2026. Skills testing will include an assessment of various lifeguard skills, fitness level, as well as a verbal interview. To attend either skills test, applications must be received online by 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2026, and you must receive an email invitation with details of the skills testing event. Applications received after April 1 will be considered on an as‑needed basis. Training and Certification Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification classes are offered by the City of Mesa beginning in February. Uniform and Incentives All staff will be provided with a black swimsuit/shorts uniform, two lifeguard t-shirts, and a Fox 40 whistle. Visible tattoos with inappropriate lettering or images such as nudity or offensive language must be covered. Visible body piercings must be appropriate and professional. The City of Mesa is offering reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a Water Safety Instructor Certification (up to $229) through the City of Mesa. Eligibility requirements will be provided upon employment offer and must be met to receive reimbursements. Minimum Qualifications Good (3 - 9 months) experience as a lifeguard OR at least three months' experience as a participant or coach in competitive swimming, artistic swimming, diving, or water polo. Special Requirements Valid Lifeguard Certification and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certification. Substance Abuse Testing Due to function safety and/or security sensitive nature, individuals shall be subject to pre‑employment or pre‑placement alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.
