Pediatric Phlebotomy - First Shift

Introduction Duke University Health System Clinical Laboratories Work with a state‑of‑the‑art laboratory that is accredited and certified. The multidisciplinary team serves rare and complex testing needs for Duke Health patients, contributes to education, and conducts cutting‑edge diagnostics research. Relocation and Bonus Lump sum relocation assistance of $3,000 and a $2,500 commitment bonus are available for this position. Location Duke University Hospital General Description Perform a variety of technical procedures involved in the procurement, processing, and evaluation of patient specimens for diagnosis and treatment. Provide routine clerical and technical support, including specimen collection, patient registration, order entry, and liaison with outside clients. Job Duties Perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures. Conduct special tests such as cytogenetics, general laboratory assays, point‑of‑care testing, urinalysis without a microscope, phlebotomy, and specimen management. Obtain total volume, perform aliquots, and distribute all urine specimens. Determine urine volume, label aliquot containers, and maintain accurate records. Communicate professionally with patients, families, and medical personnel to gather information, explain procedures, alleviate concerns, and facilitate cooperation. Maintain patient identification and laboratory records; register and accession specimens and perform order entry. Execute quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to ensure compliance. Receive and process specimens according to laboratory protocols. Use Beaker software to record specimen receipt. Verify specimen labels, requisitions, and orders; sort specimens appropriately. Assist in the distribution of specimens, supplies, and reports; perform courier activities as needed. Maintain inventory, stock supplies, and clean laboratory glassware. Utilize hospital information systems and software for documentation. Support maintenance of specimens and slides. Perform routine laboratory equipment maintenance. Assist with office tasks such as word processing and record keeping. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Education High School diploma or GED. Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended for assignment to phlebotomy. Experience Alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. At least 2 years experience as a Clinical Tech I or certification as a Phlebotomist with required competency for assigned duties. Degrees, Licensure, and Certifications Certification as a Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board or agency may be required for assignment to Phlebotomy Services. Certification of Basic Life Support is preferred. Pediatric phlebotomy experience is required. National Healthcare Association – Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists – Phlebotomy Technician Examination (PBT(ASCP)), International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE), National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or another national certification approved by Clinical Labs leadership. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic phlebotomy and specimen processing techniques. Knowledge of medical terminology (preferred). Basic computer skills. Effective professional communication skills to interact with patients and customers.
