The School Nurse

HKS serves in the New York City/Long Island area from its new headquarters in dynamic downtown Brooklyn and the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youth and Adults of Sands Point, New York, which has a network of regional offices that extends HKS' reach across the United States.

Helen Keller Services for the Blind is thrilled to announce we will be expanding our Children's Learning Center to two brand-new Long Island locations in Nassau and Suffolk County! These state-of-the-art facilities will serve preschool children who are blind or have low vision, as well as multiple disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, or pervasive developmental delays. This expansion reflects HKSB's commitment to ensuring that Long Island families have access to the same high-quality early education and support services that have transformed lives at the CLC in Brooklyn.

The School Nurse is responsible for the execution of HKS's Mission, goals and objectives through the representing the agency and acting as a full time School Nurse in the Children's Learning Center. Assuring the health and safety of approximately 60 special education preschoolers. Must demonstrate a sincere commitment to HKS's Mission and Values and conduct him/herself at a high professional level at all times and project a positive image of HKS internally and externally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and Conduct Children's Learning Center Health Assessments

• School Nurse will identify and evaluate the school and family's health needs.
• Review and assess all medical documentation of new and continuing students to determine appropriateness of placement.
• Assess the families' strengths and challenges during the initial intake process and assess the need for further health / medical supports from within the school and from outside medical facilities.
• Where appropriate, the School Nurse will represent the CLC with other social services agencies and medical facilities.
• Understand and execute a formal case review of the student's medical history including general health forms, vision, neurological and other specialized reports.
• Gain an understanding through formal in-person assessment of each child and through dialogue with the student's parents and medical professionals to determine appropriate classroom placement and need for health care supports.
• Assess the student's present level of functioning and need for enhance medical interventions.
• Based on the student's IEP evaluations and accompanying medical assessments and the student's parent's input, determine if such documents are accurate and adequately represent all the child's medical needs.
• The school nurse identifies expected outcomes for a plan that is individualized to the student or the situation.

Children's Learning Center School Nurse Related Concepts

The Children's Learning Centers', School Nurse will be able to explain, demonstrate, provide instruction and reinforce all areas of each student's medical needs to the Children's Learner Center staff. This will be done through working collaboratively with the School Social Worker and the Intake and Evaluation Coordinator.

Will work on preventing and promoting health focused on the children at the school, taking into consideration the members of the school community (parents, teachers, etc.). Additionally, will provide care and assistance to our children who have fragile health. The School Nurse will help families locate resources, such as housing, medical insurance, Medicaid and other appropriate social supports.

Commitment to the Students and their Families

1. The School Nurse manage the treatments and medications prescribed by medical professional's prior written authorization and Rxs.
2. Control and monitor students affected by chronic and severe medical conditions, by building a network along with the families, teachers, the School Social Worker and other health professionals in the community.
3. The Children's Learning Center School Nurse will respect the rights of each student's family to participate in decisions regarding their assessment and instructional program.
4. The Children's Learning Center School Nurse will effectively monitor each child's medical wellness on a daily basis.
5. The Children's Learning Center School Nurse will advise the parents, the School Principal, social worker or other appropriate health professionals when students need a more specialized level of care.
6. Advise families about their children's health, during individual and group meetings as well as the school community on health related topics.
7. When communication is needed related to OCFS/communicable diseases the school nurse will disseminate that information through the ClassDoJo platform and through email.

1. The Children's Learning Center School Nurse will maintain their New York State certification/licensure by remaining current with pediatric medical research via continuing education opportunities.
2. The School Nurse will expand her / his skills and knowledge in order to meet the growing needs of students who are now attending school with more complex and chronic health needs.
3. The School Nurse will attend ongoing professional development workshops and seminars.
4. The Children's Learning Center School Nurse will provide medical trainings to the Children's Learning Center staff.
5. The school nurse will evaluate her / his own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules and regulations.
6. The Children's Learning Center School Nurse will participate and contribute in monthly team meetings and all full staff meetings.
7. The Children's Learning Center School Nurse will maintain a professional demeanor at all times and contribute to the upkeep of their personal space and shared workspace.
8. The school nurse collects, analyzes and synthesizes comprehensive data pertinent to the student's health or the situation to ensure the highest quality of health and educational services.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing and 2 years' experience in a pediatric or school setting.
• Strong technical skills including MS Office, Outlook, school related applications.

RN registration certificate from New York State
