The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees.**Description of Work**The North Carolina Forest Service is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina. The primary job functions of this position are: • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment, as well as trouble shoots complex mechanical problems including diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulics, brakes and undercarriage problems. • Will need to use and comprehend repair manuals and schematics. • Provide irrigation equipment repair including electric, PTO and engine driven pumps as well as repair and maintain specialized forestry equipment and will also provide welding and metal fabrication. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, hunters, intense heat, dust and smoke. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday and/or weekend work. Wildfire & disaster/emergency response functions require readiness 24/7. Some overnight travel required for emergency response and/or training. Residency will be discussed at the time of interview.
