Unit: School Of Medicine Department: Surgery Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Departmentof Surgery is to provide nationally ranked, advanced,patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe surgical services andsciences across all levels of care, as well as to create the finesttraining environment for the region’s future surgicalspecialists. Chief Purpose of this position: VCU Health Department ofSurgery is seeking a general surgeon for our practice at CommunityMemorial Hospital (CMH) in South Hill, Virginia, who will serve asthe Trauma Medical Director at CMH for the development of a LevelIII trauma center. This position will be within the VCU Acute CareSurgery division and operates within the VCU trauma system networkwhich includes a Level I Trauma Center located in Richmond,Virginia. Position Responsibilities: Clinical The trauma medical director will be an integral part of the generalsurgery practice and trauma care coverage at Community MemorialHospital with the opportunity to work at other VCUHS locationsincluding clinical coverage and service at the VCU level I TraumaCenter. The candidate must be Board eligible/Board certified inGeneral Surgery with additional qualifications in surgical criticalcare is preferred. Must have excellent skills in emergency generalsurgery and elective community general surgery including minimallyinvasive procedures. Administrative The Trauma Medical Director (TMD) is responsible for thedevelopment, growth and oversight of the Trauma Program and Traumaservice at the Level III trauma center within the VCU trauma systemnetwork and work closely and collaboratively with the Chair of theTrauma System Network. The TMD must be able to demonstrateeffective interpersonal skills and an understanding of theinterdependent roles of various allied health professions. The TMDis responsible for promoting high standards of practice through thedevelopment of trauma policies, protocols and practice guidelines,participating in rigorous performance improvement monitoring at theCommunity Memorial hospital and within the Trauma network. The TMDmust be involved in the development of the EMS trauma component inthe South Hill region and invested in prehospital personneltraining, EMS performance improvement, and prehospital patientsafety. Teaching This faculty member will have teaching responsibilities for anyresidents or fellows who may rotate at Community Memorial Hospitalor as applicable during rotations at the VCUHS main hospital. TheTMD will work closely with the VCU Center for Trauma and CriticalCare Education (CTCCE) to provide trauma care education to EMSproviders in the region, nursing, residents and faculty of alldisciplines involved in the Level III trauma center. Research Collaboration with basic science faculty in Surgery, VCUHS Level ITrauma center, and the VCU School of Medicine will beencouraged. Service Faculty member will serve on, Divisional, Departmental, College,and/or University committees as necessary, as well as local andregional Trauma and EMS committees, and in a professional capacityin their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. Qualifications: Board Certified in General Surgery Virginia state licensure Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotionalintelligence Ability to function in a complex matrixed environment Effective skills in managing conflict Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinicalresearch Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member atVCU Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
