Senior Controller - Commercial Real Estate

Location: Ocala, FL
Pay: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
Job Type: Full-Time

About the Opportunity

An established, family-owned commercial real estate investment and management company is seeking an experienced Senior Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of a growing portfolio of commercial properties located throughout Florida, New York, and Massachusetts.

This is a highly visible leadership role for someone who enjoys being hands-on, driving process improvements, mentoring teams, and partnering with ownership to support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical accounting expertise with exceptional leadership skills and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Work Schedule

• Monday through Thursday: In-office
• Friday: Remote (business needs permitting)
• Additional flexibility may be required during month-end, year-end, and special projects

Position Summary

The Senior Controller will oversee and help complete all accounting, financial reporting, cash management, payroll oversight, insurance administration, and financial operations across multiple business entities and commercial real estate holdings. This individual will lead and mentor accounting staff, collaborate with ownership and external partners, and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency through technology, automation, and modern financial processes.

The successful candidate must be comfortable rolling up their sleeves and working in the details such as month end close and general accounting work while also leading a team and serving as a trusted advisor to ownership.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all day-to-day accounting and financial operations for multiple entities
• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
• Manage general ledger activity, reconciliations, and financial reporting
• Prepare and review financial statements for internal stakeholders and financial institutions
• Monitor cash flow, banking relationships, debt obligations, and intercompany transactions
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll functions, and treasury activities
• Coordinate with external CPA firms regarding tax preparation, audits, and year-end reporting
• Review tax returns, adjusting journal entries, and supporting schedules
• Maintain capital expenditure and depreciation schedules
• Negotiate and manage commercial property and liability insurance programs
• Assist with employee benefits administration, including health insurance programs
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis initiatives
• Provide leadership to accounting personnel located both locally and remotely
• Partner with ownership, developers, and operational leaders on strategic initiatives and new projects
• Evaluate and recommend technology solutions, automation tools, AI-driven efficiencies, and process improvements
• Help assess and implement property management and accounting systems as the organization continues to grow
• Ensure confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive financial and family-office related matters

Qualifications Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 10+ years of accounting experience in public and/or private accounting
• 5+ years of commercial real estate accounting experience
• Strong understanding of property management accounting, lease structures, and commercial real estate financial analysis
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including experience building and maintaining complex financial models and spreadsheets
• Experience managing multiple entities and intercompany transactions
• Strong knowledge of financial statement preparation and cash flow management
• Experience supervising and developing accounting staff
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
• High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion

Preferred

• CPA designation
• Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Experience with QuickBooks Enterprise or multi-entity QuickBooks environments
• Experience with Yardi, Genesis, Breeze, or other property management/accounting platforms
• Knowledge of commercial property and liability insurance administration
• Experience with project management, business intelligence, automation, or AI-enabled business tools
