Director of Career Services

UMass Boston

General Summary The Director of Career Services in the College of Management plays a pivotal role in developing and implementing a strategic approach to connecting students with future careers, offering personalized guidance, and fostering industry connections. The incumbent will report to the Dean and work collaboratively to develop strategies to advance student career and internship opportunities at undergraduate and graduate levels. The incumbent will provide career counseling to undergraduate and graduate students, job search support, maintain relationships with hiring managers in local companies and organizations, and stay updated on industry trends while organizing workshops and analyzing data for service improvement. This role reports to the Dean and is a cornerstone of students’ professional journeys, impacting their lives and contributing to the College's success and commitment to preparing future business leaders. Examples of Duties Development of career success strategies: Working with the Dean, establish strategies to advance strong partnerships with public and private industry and organizations to promote student internship and career placement opportunities and strong partnerships. Internship and Job Placement: Cultivate strong relationships with corporate partners to bolster internship and job placement rates. Create internship and job opportunities for students to advance College of Management rankings at global and local levels, including boosting starting salaries, placement rates, etc. Data Management and Reporting: Maintain meticulous records of student interactions, career outcomes, and job placement statistics. Generate reports and analyses to gauge the efficacy of career services programs and initiatives. Personalized Career Counseling: Provide one‑on‑one career counseling sessions to College of Management students, guiding them in exploring their interests, defining career goals, and developing tailored career plans. Job Search Support: Assist students in crafting effective job search strategies, encompassing resume and cover letter creation, interview preparation, and networking techniques. Industry Expertise: Stay abreast of the latest trends, developments, and opportunities in industries relevant to College of Management graduates. Share this knowledge with students to empower them to make informed career decisions. Interactive Workshops and Presentations: Deliver workshops and presentations on topics such as career exploration, personal branding, job market trends, and interview skills. Develop and conduct engaging career development programs to enhance students’ employability. Alumni Engagement: Foster and nurture strong connections with College of Management alumni, leveraging their expertise and networks for the benefit of current students. Organize alumni events and facilitate networking opportunities for students and alumni. Career Resources: Develop and curate a wealth of career resources. Provide students with access to pertinent information, resources, and databases to facilitate their career exploration and job search efforts. Professional Development: Continuously enhance your own professional knowledge and skills by participating in workshops, conferences, and professional organizations. Stay abreast of best practices in career counseling and incorporate them into your daily activities. Collaboration: Collaborate closely with faculty, staff, the College of Management's undergraduate Management Achievement Program, and other offices on campus (e.g., UMass Boston's Academic & Career Engagement & Success Center) to seamlessly integrate career development activities into the broader student experience. Contribute to the development of career‑related curricula and experiential learning opportunities. Other duties as assigned. Success Measures Student Satisfaction: Assess student satisfaction through feedback surveys and gauge the effectiveness of career counseling services based on student testimonials and success stories. Employment Rates: Track and report on the percentage of College of Management graduates employed within specific time limits after graduation. Internship Placement: Monitor and enhance the rate of internship placement for College of Management students, ensuring they gain access to valuable experiential learning opportunities. Alumni Engagement in Career Services: Evaluate the degree of alumni engagement in career services activities, including mentorship programs, networking events, and job referrals. Employer Partnerships: Assess the quantity and quality of partnerships with employers, encompassing internships and job opportunities, to guarantee a diverse and robust pipeline for students. Program Enhancement: Continuously evaluate and refine career services programs and initiatives based on student needs, industry trends, and best practices. Data Analysis: Regularly analyze data related to student outcomes, such as employment rates and salary ranges, to identify areas for improvement and tailor career services accordingly. Collaboration and Integration: Measure the level of collaboration and integration with faculty, staff, and other campus departments to ensure career services are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the student experience. Qualifications A Bachelor's degree in business or related field is required. A minimum of five (5)–seven (7) years of relevant successful professional experience with outcomes in boosting student career opportunities. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey career information and advice to diverse student populations. Demonstrated ability to build rapport, establish effective relationships, and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. Proficiency in using career development tools, online resources, and career‑related software, as well as basic computer skills. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree: A Master’s degree in business or related field is preferred. Certifications: Relevant certifications such as Certified Career Counselor (CCC) are desirable. Experience: Experience in career services or advising within a higher education institution, particularly in a business school setting, is preferred. Networking: A strong professional network with connections to local and regional businesses, alumni, and industry professionals. Data Analysis: Proficiency in data analysis and the ability to use data to inform decision‑making and improve career services. Multilingual Skills: Proficiency in languages other than English, particularly those relevant to the student population, is an asset. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Career Development: In-depth knowledge of career development theories, strategies, and best practices. Industry Knowledge: Understanding of current business and industry trends, job markets, and the specific career paths available to business school graduates. Counseling Skills: Strong counseling and advising skills, including active listening, empathy, and the ability to provide constructive feedback. Networking Skills: Excellent networking and relationship‑building skills to connect students with employers, alumni, and industry professionals. Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in using career‑related technology platforms, databases, and software for counseling and job search support. Event Planning: Ability to plan and execute career‑related events, workshops, and seminars. Cultural Competency: Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse cultural and demographic backgrounds of students, with the ability to provide culturally relevant guidance. Data Management: Proficient in maintaining accurate records, data analysis, and reporting to measure the effectiveness of career services. Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to evolving career trends and student needs. Teamwork: Collaborative spirit and the ability to work effectively within a team and across departments to integrate career development into the student experience. Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to provide information effectively to students, faculty, and external partners.
