Benefits Assistant

Job Responsibilities The Benefits Assistant is responsible for all data entry related to health benefits, retirement, and leave benefits. The role supports the administration of all employee benefit programs by providing accurate information, assisting with enrollments and changes, maintaining benefits records, and serving as a point of contact for employee benefits inquiries. The assistant works with the HR Generalist to manage the benefit programs while ensuring compliance with state and federal laws. Assist with benefits administration for the College, including meeting employees regarding insurance and retirement benefits, enrolling and changing benefits, and processing terminations; ensure COBRA information is disseminated appropriately. Coordinate enrollment, changes, and terminations with third‑party vendors, audit membership rosters, and ensure all benefit updates are timely and correctly processed; maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of benefits rules and regulations (FLSA, ACA, etc.). Manage leave administration, including operating the web‑based leave system for all full‑time faculty and staff, communicating leave policies to employees, updating payroll for pay changes due to leave, auditing leave usage, and preparing leave reports. Review Benefits Orientation with new employees and support benefit communications during onboarding in collaboration with the HR Generalist. Assist with mandatory ACA compliance reporting, including part‑time employee eligibility measurement, 1095‑C generation and distribution, and 1094‑C upload to the IRS. Work with the payroll administrator to compare payroll records to benefits rosters at least three times per year (January, April, August) and verify payroll accuracy. Enter new enrollments and changes by the 15th of the effective month and process changes within one week of receipt. Minimum Requirements A high school diploma and administrative experience; a bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required work experience. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in an HR‑related field relevant to the position. 3 to 5 years of hands‑on HR work experience, including employee benefits and system administration. Certification in HR‑related accreditation (SHRM or HRCI). Experience with State of SC Benefits / PEBA.
