Materials Management Plan Coordinator

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Director, this term-limited position supports the development and implementation of the County's Materials Management Plan. The Coordinator will work collaboratively with County staff, consultants, advisory committees, and external partners to ensure project objectives and timelines are met. The position supports public engagement efforts, compliance with state regulations, data coordination, consultant deliverables, and grant administration. This role is grant-funded and is currently anticipated to begin in 2026, with potential extensions depending on continued funding availability.

Essential Functions

1. Support the development of the County's Materials Management Plan by contributing to project planning, timeline tracking, deliverable review, and interdepartmental coordination.
2. Assist in ensuring compliance with Part 115 of the Michigan Solid Waste Management Act, aligning plan development with state requirements and operational standards.
3. Coordinate the exchange of data, resources, and materials between County departments, consultants, and the Planning Committee to support effective analysis and plan development.
4. Review consultant work products, reports, and draft plans, offering feedback to ensure alignment with County objectives and standards.
5. Support the public engagement process by helping to plan and attend meetings, identify key stakeholders, gather community feedback, and ensure accurate documentation of input.
6. Serve in a support role to County staff and advisory committees, including preparing agendas, background materials, meeting notes, and conducting policy or technical research.
7. Assist in identifying and developing partnerships with regional governments, universities, transportation providers, waste and recycling facilities, and other key stakeholders to support a regional approach to materials management.
8. Contribute to the preparation of grant applications and assist in the administration and reporting of grant-funded activities.
9. Assist in the development of internal goals, policies, and practices for Materials Management within County operations.

Employment Qualifications

Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Sustainability, Urban or Regional Planning, Public Administration or a related field with One (1) year of experience in solid waste planning, environmental policy, or a related area in a government, non-profit, or consulting setting Experience with public engagement or regional planning is desirable.

OR

A minimum of an Associate's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Sustainability, Urban or Regional Planning, Public Administration or a related field with three (3) year of experience in solid waste planning, environmental policy, or a related area in a government, non-profit, or consulting setting Experience with public engagement or regional planning is desirable.

Other Requirements: Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging, interacting and working with all individuals to ensure clarity and understanding in all interactions. Physical Requirements: This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description. These include, but are not limited to, the following requirements:

• The employee must be able to attend public meetings and workshops, perform research and analysis, and travel to various County locations and external partner sites.
• Must be able to operate standard office equipment and communicate effectively through verbal and written formats.

Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in office conditions, with occasional off-site meetings and community events.
