Visitor Experience Associate

Reports to: Associate Director, Event Operations and Visitor Experience. The Capital Jewish Museum is seeking an outgoing, professional Visitor Experience Associate to join our team. This part‑time position will be an integral part of our Operations team and how our Museum is run day‑to‑day. VEAs are responsible for engaging with the public to provide a warm, welcoming, and memorable experience at CJM; you will be tasked with running the daily frontline operations of the museum in a smooth and efficient manner. About the Capital Jewish Museum The Capital Jewish Museum is a new Jewish history and culture museum—opened Summer 2023— located at 3rd and F St. NW, Washington, DC, just a block from the National Building Museum, and short walk from Union Station. The mission of the Capital Jewish Museum is to explore the Jewish experience in the national capital region and inspire audiences to Connect, Reflect, and Act— connect across families and communities, reflect on the relevance of the past to today, and act on behalf of their communities and values. Duties and Responsibilities Greets and welcomes visitors upon their arrival and helps orient them to the Museum by letting them know the wide range of programming and activities available. Maintains a neat, clean, orderly workspace and visitor presentation. Opens and closes museum exhibits, tidies up exhibit spaces, locks and unlocks doors, and resets interactives. Assists visitors with wayfinding throughout the Museum. Assists security staff in monitoring visitors, alerting guards to anything that needs closer attention. Accurately answers visitor questions regarding a wide variety of topics including general CJM/DC history questions, directional questions, questions about tourism and other attractions in the Penn Quarter area. Fields phone calls from museum guests and members, answers questions, transfers phone calls to staff, and other duties. Sells and renews memberships at the Welcome Desk and over the phone. While working the Welcome Desk, is also responsible for day‑to‑day selling operations of the Museum shop. Assists with quarterly physical inventory. Rotates with other VEAs to work the Museum café cart, including restocking. Monitors and controls visitor flow into Museum spaces at entry and exit points, reporting any issues with visitor flow to supervisors. Responds to visitor concerns and complaints in a calm, professional manner, elevating when needed; reports any concerns to supervisors in a timely and efficient manner. Provides professional, efficient, and approachable support and excellent customer service to visitors and staff alike. Assists with special events that take place at the Museum throughout the year, including event setup and breakdown, check‑in/registration, and answering questions. May work with other department heads on projects and duties, as needed. Performs any other duties as may reasonably be required. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Two years of customer service experience desired; experience in Visitor Services at cultural institutions or in the tourism industry preferred. Must be able to interact with various personality traits and continue to maintain a professional demeanor with both staff and visitors alike. Must be responsible, flexible, punctual and able to work well under pressure. Proficiency in cash handling and inventory management preferred. May be asked to work shifts including weekends, nights and holidays; and/or work extended hours if required. Welcome and embrace differences among employees and visitors. Related Skills Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; problem‑solving ability, attention to detail, ability to recognize and address day‑to‑day and long‑term responsibilities without direct supervision; goal oriented; be supportive of colleagues in all areas of museum operations. Salary and Benefits $20.50 per hour. Part‑time, non‑exempt position. Monthly Metro Stipend to defray the cost of commuting. Paid Time Off and Sick Leave. This position is specifically for a Saturday shift, 9:30 am – 5:00 pm; other shifts may become available on a rolling basis. Employee discount. Vacation and sick leave accrual.
