Senior Veterinary Technician

Overview Under the direction of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, contributes to the health and well being of patients by delivering outstanding, high quality veterinary technician services that meet the standards of the MVMA and MAVT as well as VMC standards and protocols. Competently performs radiologic diagnostic services such as Computed Tomography, Nuclear Scintigraphy, Ultrasound, and Radioiodine therapy. Assists clinicians and other medical staff members with veterinary medical procedures which may include (but are not limited to) radiography, surgical assisting, administering treatments, animal nursing, animal restraint and handling, clinical research, etc. within assigned service area as well as across functions as needed. Performs at a higher level in terms of complexity of cases with little or no supervision. Essential Functions Understand and perform ultrasound diagnostic and monitoring procedures associated with small animals at a competent level. Cross train in all medical imaging procedures and diagnostics. With oversight by a DVM, apply clinical job knowledge and competence to diagnosis, treatment, and care. Provide excellent service to DVMs and the medical team that support quality patient care. Facilitate open communication and teamwork among clinical care team members (DVM students, veterinary technicians, etc.) in support of positive patient outcomes and excellent patient care. Assist with quality control of radiographic equipment, notify appropriate repair personnel for equipment problems, and ensure equipment is clean and in working order. Restrain and handle animals and assist with animal restraint and handling. Perform a variety of medical and diagnostic procedures depending upon clinical indications and area of service; understand and perform diagnostic and monitoring procedures associated with small and large animals at a competent level. Assist with Medical Imaging office duties as needed. Under the direction of a DVM, apply clinical job knowledge and competence to the management of the patient. Deliver outstanding customer service, including greeting and receiving patients and clients in a professional, caring and courteous manner, answering phone calls promptly, responding to clients, coworkers, and medical staff needs and requests, redirecting calls, etc. Answer questions and explain or demonstrate procedures and equipment for clients, residents, interns, senior veterinary students, and technician students; assist with teaching labs. Perform record‑keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communication, census information, etc. Understand, be proficient in, and be able to teach proper use of diagnostic/medical equipment used in the area of service. Maintain service area schedule. Ensure that all services and supplies are charged in accordance with the hospital fee schedule. Adhere to VMC safety and infection control policies and procedures. Work in a clinical setting. Other Functions Assist in other service areas; develop skills that are cross functional and use time efficiently, including helping other areas of the hospital. Maintain a clean environment in hospital areas and ensure that these areas are adequately ordered, stocked and that equipment is in working order. Participate in daily rounds. Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician, or Director. Physical Requirements Must occasionally stand, walk, sit, push, pull, use hands to finger, hold, handle, or feel animals or objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; restrain animals with both hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without assistance, occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment Work is performed at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Medical Center. The environment may include exposure to noise, bright/low lighting, temperature variations, animal bodily fluids and waste, and allergens such as mold, dust, hay, animal hair and dander. Supervision Immediate supervisor: Supervisor; Clinical Manager. Work direction given by: Supervisor; Clinician; Clinical Manager; Director. Qualifications Required Qualifications Graduate of an Animal Health Technician or equivalent program. Certified as an MVMA/MAVT technician. One year of veterinary technician experience. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision. Preferred Qualifications/Selection Criteria Problem solving skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Willingness to be flexible to meet patient care needs. Knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology. Knowledge of proper restraint and handling of large and small animals. Certified technician with certification recognized in Minnesota. Two years of veterinary technician experience. Proficiency with PC and software programs. Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $24.58–$29.57 per hour depending on education, qualifications, and experience. Time Appointment: 100% full-time.
