Job Description

Job Description

Job Title: Traveling Superintendent (Preferably live in Indiana or surrounding states)

Job Description

This Traveling Superintendent role leads ground-up and tenant improvement construction projects for quick-service restaurants and similar commercial retail facilities. You will oversee all on-site activities from site work and civil coordination through final finishes, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. The position requires frequent regional travel, fast-paced project execution, and close collaboration with project managers, subcontractors, and clients while using digital tools such as FieldLens on a Microsoft Surface Pro for daily reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all daily construction activities on-site for ground-up and tenant build-out projects, including site work and civil coordination.
  • Partner closely with the Project Manager to drive overall project progress, ensuring alignment with schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate subcontractors, equipment deliveries, materials, utilities, and inspections to keep projects on track.
  • Work with subcontractors to complete projects within the established budget and time frame, proactively addressing issues and constraints.
  • Create and maintain detailed two-week look-ahead schedules and ensure all trades, materials, and inspections are properly sequenced.
  • Assess the work quality and progress of subcontractors and other field personnel, providing direction and corrections as needed.
  • Prepare thorough daily field log reports using FieldLens on a Microsoft Surface Pro, documenting progress, issues, and resolutions.
  • Maintain a safe jobsite in accordance with OSHA standards, actively identifying and mitigating hazards and reinforcing safety practices.
  • Coordinate and schedule all required inspections and utility connections to support timely project completion.
  • Represent the general contractor professionally in all client-facing interactions with owners, tenants, inspectors, and other stakeholders.
  • Remain physically present and active on the jobsite, walking and overseeing work rather than remaining trailer-bound.
  • Assist with finish work as needed, including carpentry-related tasks such as door hanging, caulking, décor installation, and trim installation.
  • Leverage experience and sound judgment to plan work, solve problems, and make timely decisions that support project goals.
  • Adapt to fast-paced project cycles, typically 60–90 days, and manage multiple moving parts across several short-duration projects annually.
  • Work some Saturdays when necessary to maintain or recover schedule, particularly when crews are on-site.
  • Report to a Division Manager, providing regular updates on project status, risks, and resource needs.

Essential Skills

  • Ground-up construction experience on at least three projects, including site work and civil coordination.
  • Experience in quick-service restaurant, retail, or commercial construction, including tenant build-out projects.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally for projects, with a home base ideally in or near Indiana, Illinois, or Missouri.
  • Comfort working on fast-paced projects with typical durations of approximately 60–90 days (around 3–4 months).
  • Strong scheduling and planning discipline, including the ability to produce detailed two-week look-ahead schedules.
  • Demonstrated construction leadership background with either 2+ years as a Superintendent (preferred) or 3–4+ years as a Foreman/lead in a trade with full project lifecycle exposure and the ability to run site operations.
  • Proven ability to coordinate subcontractors, materials, utilities, and inspections to meet schedule and budget requirements.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and construction documents.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and overseeing their work for quality, safety, and adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Client-facing communication skills with the ability to represent the general contractor professionally to owners, clients, and inspectors.
  • Technology competence, including the ability to perform field reporting on a tablet (Microsoft Surface Pro), use email, and operate basic software tools.
  • Ability to use FieldLens for all daily reporting and documentation.
  • Physical ability to move around the jobsite extensively, including walking and active oversight of field operations.
  • Willingness to work some Saturdays as needed to maintain project schedules.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check, social media screen, and drug screen as part of the hiring process.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Carpentry background, particularly in finish work such as doors, trim, and décor installation.
  • Experience transitioning between multiple short-duration projects within a year.
  • Experience with Procore or similar construction management software.
  • Prior experience in quick-service restaurant construction, retail construction, or broader commercial construction environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions in the field.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with project teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation, scheduling, and reporting.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role with work performed on active construction sites five days per week, with additional Saturday work as needed when crews are on-site to maintain schedule. Projects are primarily regional, with most work occurring in and around Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, and typical project durations of approximately 60–90 days. The Superintendent travels to project locations and may return home on weekends as the project and location allow. The role requires significant on-site mobility and active oversight of construction activities rather than working from a trailer. You will use a Microsoft Surface Pro and FieldLens for daily reporting and communication, and a company-provided cellphone will support coordination and field operations. The work environment includes typical commercial construction site conditions, including exposure to outdoor weather, active trades, and varying site conditions. Safety is a core focus, and all work must comply with OSHA standards. Travel support includes mileage reimbursement from mobilization to demobilization, a per diem for daily expenses, and company-covered lodging such as hotels or short-term rentals, with reimbursement available for personal lodging solutions such as an RV or camper.
