FLAGSTAFF UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 1 Position Description Position Title : School Nurse, Specialized Program (Sensory Communication Program; .80 FTE) Building/Site: Flagstaff High School Supervisor : School Administrator, Health Services Coordinator, and Executive Director of Student Services and Educational Excellence 2026-2027 School Year: .80 FTE; Benefits offered; ASRS participation (required); Licensed Professional salary schedule. Start date: August 3, 2026. (Hires new to the district will start on July 28, 2026, for training.) SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Health Services Coordinator and School Administrator, provide and maintain safe and effective medical care to qualifying students in the Sensory Communication classroom. Collaborate with classroom teacher, as well as other related service providers, to enhance continuity of health care on a daily basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this class.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
PHYSICAL TASKS Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion and movement is required to perform the aspects of the job. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves sitting and moving for extended periods of time, moving from one location to another, reaching, bending, holding, and grasping objects. Verbal communication ability required.
EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS, MATERIALS Uses office equipment which includes but is not limited to: computers, white boards, and office or instructional equipment. FUSD recognizes the ever changing development of technology but expects all staff to keep abreast of changing technology opportunities and use tools and devices provided to them. Health equipment and tools normally associated with health positions; exposure to biohazard materials.
WORKING CONDITIONS Indoor - classroom environment. Outdoor - all weather conditions and temperatures. Playground environment. Contact with the public, employees, children and parents. - Administers first aid, medication, procedures and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
- Assesses situations involving student safety and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information and complying with legal requirements.
- Provide continuing education and training for staff helping support student health needs in the classroom.
- Conducts programs and/or activities (e.g., health screening, health education, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with government mandated requirements.
- Develops health care plans for the purpose of addressing students' health needs and implementing health care directions from parents and/or physicians.
- Implements school health care plans for the purpose of providing appropriate care.
- Maintains contact with parent/guardian for the purpose of alerting them to any changes in student health and/or referring students for further medical/emotional intervention as needed.
- Maintains health care plans, records (e.g. mandated screening, immunization records, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
- Monitors reporting procedures for all students and health activities for the purpose of ensuring the processing is completed per policy and/or regulation.
- Document each interaction and services provided to students including correspondence with parents/guardians and health care providers.
- Refer students requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing needed medical/dental treatment, vision or hearing services, etc.
- Reports incidents (e.g, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintain student's personal safety, a positive learning environment, and adhering to district and/or school policies.
- Reports students with contagious diseases to the Health Services Coordinator and local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing the spread of infection and complying with the law.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns.
- Assists other school personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Participates in a variety of meetings, including IEP meetings, for the purpose of sharing important health information and staying up to date with current FUSD nurse expectations.

- Follows guidelines and procedures recommended for achieving goals.
- Works with building administration to individualize goals by identifying objectives, activities and criteria.
- Supports administration in promoting positive student conduct.
- Knows school expectations for behavior and attendance.
- Enforces school policies, rules, and procedures in the classroom, on campus, and at school-related activities.
- Complies with Arizona Revised Statutes, district policies, federal laws and regulations, and administrative guidelines.
- Is informed and follows district policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the building administration, health services coordinator or superintendent.
- Nursing degree with two years of healthcare experience preferred
- Arizona Registered Nurse License current and in good standing
- Experience working with children and adolescence desired
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification for Health Care Providers current (BLS CPR)
