1. WHO WE ARE

Motor Machining is the shop other shops call when the job is hard. We machine heavy-duty diesel and automotive engines in Manitowoc — blocks, cranks, heads, line boring, sleeving, valve work — and we built that reputation one part at a time, by refusing to send out work we wouldn't put our own name on. We're a crew of about ten, small enough that everyone's work is visible.

2. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• 3+ years in an engine machine shop, engine rebuilder, or dealership — machining, assembly, or both.
• You can set up and run at least two of: boring, honing, surfacing, crank grinding, valve seat and guide work, rod reconditioning, or balancing.
• You want to learn the rest. We will train you on the machines you do not run yet.
• You are fluent with micrometers, dial bore gauges, dial indicators, Plastigage, and torque-angle wrenches.
• You work in 0.0001" and you write down what you measure.
• You can read a service manual and apply a spec, including surface finish requirements.
• ASE Engine Machinist (M1/M2/M3), diesel platform experience, or dyno time is a plus, not a requirement.

3. WHO YOU ARE

• Precise. You trust the micrometer, not your eye.
• Deliberate. You think a setup all the way through before you start, because you cannot put metal back.
• Honest. You would rather scrap a core or tear an engine back down than ship something you are unsure about.
• Self-directed. When one job comes off the machine, you have already staged the next one.
• Clean. You know that chips and dirt kill engines, and your machines show it.
• Coachable. You take feedback without getting defensive, and you give it the same way.

4. WHAT WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR

• Someone who eyeballs a dimension or trusts the last person’s measurement.
• Someone who starts a cut before the part is fully inspected.
• Someone who waits to be told what to do next.
• Someone who hides a mistake or blames the other end of the shop.
• Someone who leaves chips, coolant, and a mess for the next person.

5. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

• Tearing down and inspecting cores, and telling us what the job really needs before we cut.
• Boring, honing, decking, align honing, sleeving, and installing cam bearings.
• Grinding and polishing cranks, reconditioning rods, balancing rotating assemblies.
• Cutting valve seats, replacing guides, resurfacing and pressure-testing heads.
• Assembling short blocks, long blocks, and complete engines to spec.
• Measuring and recording every clearance, then signing the sheet.
• Priming, run-in and dyno testing, and prepping engines for the customer.
• Keeping your machines maintained, guarded, and clean.

You will be measured on proficiency, comeback rate, first-pass yield, on-time completion, and safety — all of it visible to you, none of it a surprise at review time.
