Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: PACU RN Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Mixed Hours per Shift: 8 and 12 hours Experience: Minimum 3 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS Must-Have: Must be able to recover pediatric patients. Must be willing to second phase patients out of the operating room. Description: Department details are for a Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The unit has 15 beds and serves both phase 1 and phase 2 patients. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:2 unless dealing with pediatric or higher acuity patients, in which case it is 1:1. Common cases involve a mix of patients, including pediatric patients. Some patients may have disabilities and require sensitive care. All operating room cases are managed with the exception of transplants. Experience with recovering pediatric patients is preferred. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC. There is a charge nurse on each shift who provides break relief and may take an assignment, but travel staff will not be utilized in the charge role. There are sometimes nurse aides in the department with one aid ratio, while RNs transport patients. Respiratory therapy equipment is available for use, including vents, CPAPs, and BiPAPs. ICU patients can be recovered in the PACU, including those on pressors and requiring blood products. Registered nurses on this unit read strips for patient monitoring. Self-scheduling and block scheduling are allowed within the shift structure. Call requirements include a maximum of 1-2 nights per 6-week schedule, totaling a maximum of 8 on-call shifts in that period. Weekend call requires 24 hours within a 6-week schedule. Holiday call is as needed during the contract. Call response time is expected within 30 minutes. Travel staff are the first to float to inpatient units as helping hands or sitters. Scrubs are provided, and there are 2 days of unit-specific orientation, including a buddy call on the first weekend. Attributes for success in this unit include kindness, willingness to help others, efficiency, and being a team player. The radius rule is 50 miles. Requests for time off must be submitted upfront, with limitations on approval for additional requests after initial submission. The cancellation policy allows for 4 shifts per contract, or 3 shifts if the contract is less than 13 weeks. Charting is done using the EPIC system. A BSN is not required for submission. The care setting is acute. The division is nursing. Shift notes indicate mixed 8 and 12-hour shifts. Required certifications include ACLS, BLS, and PALS.
