Director Of Maintenance And Facilities
East Mississippi State Hospital is a state-operated psychiatric facility under the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, providing comprehensive inpatient and residential mental health services to individuals across the region. EMSH serves a diverse population through a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes safety, quality care, and recovery-focused treatment. In addition to psychiatric services, the hospital supports multiple programs and facilities dedicated to meeting the complex clinical and operational needs of those we serve, while maintaining compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards.
The Director of Maintenance and Facilities is a supervisory-level position responsible for overseeing construction, maintenance, grounds, and the operation, maintenance, replacement, and repair of building components and systems for East Mississippi State Hospital facilities and assigned locations. The Director plans, coordinates, estimates, and schedules maintenance, alteration, renovation, and upgrade projects through the coordination of in-house and contracted skilled and semi-skilled trades work. This role develops and implements facilities management policies and procedures, including preventive maintenance schedules, and projects future needs for facility systems and structural and grounds maintenance. The Director of Maintenance and Facilities is responsible for fiscal stewardship of facilities resources, including supporting budgeting, cost estimating, and purchase/contract coordination in collaboration with Business Services. The Director supervises vocational-level employees and ensures work is planned, assigned, performed safely, and reviewed for quality and compliance. Supervision includes hiring recommendations, training, work planning and review, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline.
To be successful as the Director of Maintenance and Facilities, the employee must be a steady, hands-on leader who can balance urgent maintenance needs with long-range planning for facility and ground's reliability. This role requires strong working knowledge of building systems and trades, the ability to prioritize and inspect work for quality and compliance, and the discipline to maintain preventive maintenance and documentation. Success also depends on clear communication with hospital leadership and departments, effective supervision and accountability of staff, and sound fiscal judgment—especially when estimating costs, managing resources, and coordinating purchases and contracts in collaboration with Business Services. Must be able to implement facilities/grounds procedures and preventive maintenance schedules, prioritize and inspect work for quality/compliance, support cost estimating and purchasing/contract coordination with Business Services, and supervise staff (assign work, train, evaluate, coach, and apply progressive discipline).
Typically requires High School Diploma or GED required, plus 5–7 years of semi-skilled or higher-level experience in trades, building maintenance, facilities operations, or construction, including experience coordinating or leading work assignments. Agency Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors Degree. Trade-specific certifications/licences may be required (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler/pressure systems, backflow).
