About the Role We are looking for a motivated and curious Junior Java Developer to join our engineering team. This is a unique opportunity to grow your skills across a broad, production-grade codebase that has been built and refined over many years. You will own real work from day one — writing code, fixing bugs, deploying to AWS, and learning the craft of long-lived software in a collaborative, autonomous environment. Our platform is intentionally multi-generational. You will encounter code from different eras of Java, build tools, and architectural patterns. This is not a liability — it is a feature. Engineers here develop a deep understanding of how software evolves, and you will be part of shaping its future. What You’ll Work With Core Platform — Java & Spring Boot Work primarily with Java across multiple versions within a single long-lived codebase Build and maintain Spring Boot applications — REST APIs, background workers, and scheduled jobs Navigate and contribute to both Maven and Gradle build systems Read, understand, and refactor legacy code alongside greenfield development AWS Infrastructure Deploy and manage services using core AWS primitives: EC2, ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, SQS, SNS, and CloudWatch Write and maintain infrastructure configurations Understand how applications behave in a cloud-native environment — logging, scaling, IAM, and networking basics Supporting Technologies Maintain and extend a handful of internal Node.js applications Contribute to one-off Python AWS Lambda functions as needs arise Work with relational databases — writing SQL, understanding schemas, and managing migrations Responsibilities Develop, test, and deploy Java/Spring Boot features across the product Diagnose and resolve bugs in both new and legacy code Write clean, well-tested code with attention to maintainability Deploy changes to AWS environments and monitor application health Document your work: READMEs, runbooks, and inline code comments Communicate progress and surface blockers proactively — you will be working with a high degree of autonomy Continuously improve your understanding of the system holistically, not just your own slice What We’re Looking For Required Solid foundation in Java — comfortable with OOP, collections, exceptions, and basic concurrency Familiarity with Spring Boot or a comparable Java web framework Exposure to Maven or Gradle Exposure to SQL and relational database concepts Basic AWS literacy — you have deployed or operated something in AWS Comfortable working in a Linux/Unix terminal environment Strong written communication skills — this team operates asynchronously and documents decisions Self-directed and capable of navigating ambiguity without needing constant direction Nice to Have Familiarity with Node.js or Python (reading and making small edits) Experience working in a codebase that spans multiple Java versions or tech generations Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CodePipeline, etc.) Working Here Our team operates with a high level of autonomy.
