Intermediate Care Technician

Summary The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) serves as an advanced technician in outpatient care settings (primary care - mental health - specialty clinics) within the Department of Veterans Affairs. ICTs provide direct patient care under the supervision of licensed personnel - supporting clinical operations at VA medical centers - community-based outpatient clinics. Supports patient care - documentation - and education to improve outcomes for Veterans. Qualifications To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 07/13/2026. Positions in this series provide technical support to medical or health personnel in a variety of clinical settings. Technician experience is defined as experience that required application of the knowledge - methods - and techniques of the position to be filled. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge - skills - and abilities to perform successfully the duties of an Intermediate Care Technician - and is typically in or related to this position. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Recognizing and responding to life-threatening situations using established protocols. Understanding legal and ethical considerations of critical care (e.g. - consent - patient rights - advanced directives). Taking and recording diagnostic signs to perform patient evaluations and screenings. Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations - including crisis intervention. Supporting licensed personnel with complex - specialized - and potentially life-threatening situations. Operating medical equipment and collecting/preparing specimens. Documenting care and interventions in electronic health records. Communicating effectively with patients - families - and interdisciplinary teams. Experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the full range of technical patient care duties in outpatient clinical settings under the supervision of licensed staff. OR - Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education at this grade level - you must have successfully completed one year of graduate education or an internship directly related to the position - from an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is typically 18 semester hours - unless otherwise defined by the school. Part-time graduate education is creditable proportionally. OR - Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond one-half year of graduate study. Equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education from an accredited college or university may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Only education beyond 9 semester hours of graduate-level study may be applied. If using a combination - a transcript is required. Preferred Experience: Evidence of Lean Belt training or experience.
