Job Overview Job Title: Police Officer/Patrol Department: Police Department Reports To: Sergeant FLSA Status: Non-exempt Salary: $29.48 Summary All police officers employed by the city of Port Aransas are responsible for performing general duty police work in protecting life and property and enforcing laws and ordinances. Officers maintain law and order, prevent crimes, and protect life and property within the city. Work methods are developed through best practices and monitored by supervising officers. Incumbents must exercise sound and independent judgment in emergency and non‑emergency situations, recognize the social importance of police functions, treat the public tactfully and courteously, and perform duties efficiently without direct supervision. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Operate in conformance with federal, state, and local laws; and department and city policies and procedures Patrol the entire city or a specific beat or district on foot or in a department vehicle Check doors and windows of business establishments and investigate suspicious conditions Create and maintain records for investigations and prepare detailed offense and case reports Make arrests, issue citations, and provide public education through verbal or written warnings for violations of laws or ordinances Receive, search, fingerprint, photograph, complete booking reports, convince, and monitor prisoners at the Port Aransas holding facility Enforce traffic regulations, direct traffic, investigate, and report traffic accidents Testify in court and provide courtroom security for the Port Aransas Municipal Court Provide non‑law‑enforcement public service activities, assist the public, search for missing persons, give information regarding streets, routes, and buildings, provide public education on local laws, participate in community outreach programs, and provide other community service activities as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities No supervisory responsibility unless specifically assigned. Disqualifying conditions include any prior felony, Class A misdemeanor, or family violence conviction (including deferred adjudication); any Class B misdemeanor conviction or deferred adjudication within the preceding ten years; any pending or non‑adjudicated arrest for a criminal offense; prior discharge from any law‑enforcement agency for untruthfulness; or dishonorable military discharge. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or GED. Some college coursework or prior law‑enforcement and/or military experience is preferred. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and employees. Mathematical Skills Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10s and 100s; perform operations using units of money, weight, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability Apply common sense to carry out detailed but simple written or oral instructions; solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills Knowledge of internet and word‑processing software; operate, input, and retrieve data from department records management systems and e‑mail systems; working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid Texas Driver License in good standing Texas Peace Officer’s license issued by TCOLE Physical Demands Requires sufficient physical fitness to walk, run, stand, sit, reach, grasp, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, climb three or more flights of stairs, and climb ladders, fences, and other apparatus. Ability to push, pull, drag, or carry large objects and use reasonable force to overcome aggressive resistance. Visual acuity of 20/40 with corrected vision; hearing of muffled conversations and whispers; speech with clarity and proper enunciation; and ability to discern pleasant and noxious odors. Work Environment Exposure to wet, humid, and extreme temperature conditions; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and electrical shock risk. Noise level typically moderate to loud. Requires frequent standing, walking, and extended periods of sitting. #J-18808-Ljbffr
