SUMMARY

CIVIL ENGINEER I:

Performs entry- level civil engineer duties during assignment to seven bureaus within the DOT over an 18-month period, which allows exposure to a variety of engineering disciplines in Highway Design Bureau.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:

To perform basic engineering duties for a variety of engineering projects in Highway Design Bureau.

CIVIL ENGINEER III:

To supervise and coordinate complex engineering activities for a group of highway projects in Highway Design Bureau. YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

CIVIL ENGINEER I:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering. Experience: No experience required OR Education: Associate’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology. Experience: Two (2) years of post-graduate experience in an engineering field in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician. License/Certification: Valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel. Other Requirements: Applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards established by the hiring agency. Trainee Option: Not applicable PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering including a working knowledge of advanced high school mathematics. AFTER-HIRE REQUIREMENTS: None

Broad Group Level Advancement Available: Yes No Criteria: 17-2050 Civil Engineers Level 1 to Level 2 (17205001-BGA-01) For promotion from 17-2050 Civil Engineers-1 job title to 17-2050 Civil Engineers-2, job title the eligibility requirements in Per 303.08 Broad Group Level Advancement must be satisfied.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

CIVIL ENGINEER II:

Education: Master’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering. Experience: No experience required. OR Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering. Experience: Eighteen (18) months of post baccalaureate experience in engineering field. OR Education: Associate’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology. Experience: Eighteen (18) months of experience in an engineering field at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two (2) additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician. License/Certification: Valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel. Other Requirements: Applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards established by the hiring agency. Trainee Option: Not applicable PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of mathematics, including trigonometry and its application to field surveying and engineering computations. Experience: Four (4) years of experience in an engineering field at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two (2) additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician. License/Certification: Valid driver's license and/or access to transportation for statewide travel. Other Requirements: Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation. Evidence of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Trainee Option: Not applicable. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering with special reference to the activities of the appropriate specialty. AFTER-HIRE REQUIREMENTS: None

RESPONSIBILITIES

CIVIL ENGINEER I:

Observes the inspection of construction materials to ensure compliance with material specifications. Reviews and checks project records and documentation to determine quantities upon which payment to contractors is based. Compiles information, performs basic design functions and computes quantities. Reviews construction plans for compliance, evaluates proposed improvements and prepares design plans. Observes batch plan operations, performing engineering material laboratory tests and reviewing mix designs. Sets up and operates survey equipment, tabulates data, performs calculations. Checks and performs calculations for highway and/or bridge design layout work and drainage.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:

Compiles information, performs basic design, computes quantities and reviews highway plans. Reviews engineering plans to evaluate proposed improvements and ensure compliance with standards. Communicates with other Bureaus to gather information for highway plans. Assists in training subordinates to increase their technical knowledge and skills. Monitors progress of work to meet established schedules.

CIVIL ENGINEER III:

Analyzes, designs, and documents engineering tasks. Supervises, trains and directs subordinates to achieve specific engineering goals. Communicates and coordinates with individuals and organizations to gather input for projects. Drafts technical reports and correspondence for project development.
