As a Housing First agency, all of Building Futures' programs and services prioritize linking clients with safe and supportive housing. Our trauma-informed domestic violence care continuum aims to ensure immediate access to crisis information and help; safe shelter for women and women with their children; and support as families rebuild safe and stable lives free from homelessness and family violence. We engage the broader community in DV prevention and intervention through ongoing public awareness campaigns and State-accredited 40-hour DV counselor training.
Position Summary
The Domestic Violence Case Manager works to end domestic violence and homelessness by providing Case Management services at Sister Me Home, the agency's domestic violence safe house. This position is responsible for providing minimal weekly individual meetings and facilitate weekly group work with each client/family to further the progress of their case plan and ensuring that their stay at Sister Me Home is a successful one. Case plans include addressing their active domestic violence and their engagement in a housing plan. This position is on-call one week a month.
Essential Duties
- Provide strong trauma-informed case plans that include safety planning for each client based on agreed goals, with a clear understanding of what success will look like for each client.
- Support the client in their progress/regress and keep them focused on meeting their goals, focused on client strengths.
- Develop creative and engaging methods of delivery for Domestic Violence victims, while understanding the sensitivity and trauma informed approach necessary in serving people who have experienced Domestic Violence and their children.
- Remain current on Domestic Violence best practices and the resources available for safe house residents, make sure to keep clients well informed.
- Provide ongoing resources, case management support and counseling to the clients within our Domestic Violence safe house.
- Build community relationships with all residents on behalf of the site. This includes individual meetings and facilitates group meetings with residents, including children. Group meetings will focus on parenting skills, life skills, housing readiness...etc.
- Attend weekly safe house staff meetings and weekly house meetings for shelter residents.
- Collaborate with staff on how to support client's needs to maintain consistent services, including open communication about where clients are at and how to support each client based on their individual circumstances.
- Compliance on keeping files organized in preparation for an audit from funders throughout the year, including consistent upkeep on statistics and documentation not only in the file but in CIRCE, our client database.
- Maintain deadlines provided by Supervisor and by Director of DV Services
- Support clients through navigating various systems as it relates to their active DV, including filing a police report, a restraining order, court support, and family court and any issues regarding custody.
- Participate in regular on-call for shift coverage at SMH,
- Fulfill other duties as needed and behalf of the team if necessary.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Professional experience in the human services or related field.
- Knowledge of violence dynamics and Alameda County resources for homeless and other underserved populations. Experience working in an emergency shelter environment.
- Domestic Violence Counselor Certification or willing to obtain shortly after hire. Minimum of two (2) years working with issues of Domestic Violence and a record of successfully facilitating change and/or innovation in the Domestic Violence or related field. Plus, one-two (1-2) years of experience in homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, and child abuse.
- Proven ability working with DV populations and the ability to effectively support children who have been victimized by domestic violence.
- Valid California Driver's License, car insurance and personal vehicle.
- Ability to build collaborative, supportive and respectful working relationships with all staff and clients alike.
- Proven ability to work independently and be an effective and collaborative team player.
- Skilled at communicating with a team responsible for their own work but sharing the responsibility of the overall success of the program.
- Navigating through new roles with the intent of following through and seeing them through to success.
Physical Requirements & Working

- Ability to review a wide variety of materials in electronic or hard copy form.
- Sufficient manual dexterity to enable the employee to operate a personal computer, phone, and related equipment.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
