$77k - $104k

TechSite

Job Description

Job Description

TechSite | Columbus, OH

Pay: $77,000–$104,000 per year, based on experience

Job Type: Full-time

Location: Central Ohio – Primarily on-site at customer facilities, with potential travel

Experienced in HVAC, Mechanical Systems, or Commissioning? Ready to Take the Next Step?

TechSite is growing, and we're looking for a Mechanical Commissioning Engineer II who enjoys hands-on technical work, troubleshooting complex systems, and taking ownership of commissioning activities in mission-critical data center environments.

This is an opportunity for someone who has developed a solid foundation in mechanical systems and is ready to take on greater responsibility. You'll independently execute commissioning test procedures, identify and troubleshoot system issues, work directly with contractors and customers, and help guide less-experienced engineers in the field.

We're especially interested in candidates with direct experience performing mechanical functional performance testing and integrated systems testing. However, we also recognize that strong candidates may come from HVAC service, equipment startup, mechanical controls, or other related technical backgrounds.

You don't need to be a senior engineer or have formal management experience. We're looking for someone who understands mechanical systems, can work independently, communicates effectively, and is ready to continue developing their expertise in commissioning.

If you enjoy solving technical problems, working with complex equipment, and seeing projects through from testing to successful completion, we'd like to talk with you.

About TechSite

TechSite is a multidisciplinary engineering and technical services firm specializing in mission-critical facilities, including enterprise, colocation, and hyperscale data centers. Our services include engineering, construction, commissioning, maintenance, and facility management. We work across the entire facility lifecycle to help customers build, operate, and maintain reliable infrastructure. We're a growing company that values technical expertise, teamwork, flexibility, and giving people the autonomy to do their jobs well.

What You'll Do

Perform Mechanical Commissioning and Functional Testing

  • Independently execute mechanical commissioning test procedures at customer sites, taking ownership of assigned systems and testing activities.
  • Perform pre-functional checks, startup verification, functional performance testing, and integrated systems testing.
  • Test and verify mechanical systems, including:
  • Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) and Computer Room Air Handler (CRAH) units
  • Chilled water systems and cooling plants
  • Air handling units
  • Pumps, cooling towers, and dry coolers
  • Direct expansion (DX) and glycol cooling systems
  • Mechanical controls and building automation systems
  • Verify equipment performance, airflow, temperature, humidity, control sequences, alarms, redundancy, and failure responses.
  • Execute Functional Performance Tests (FPT) and Integrated Systems Tests (IST), including N+1 redundancy and loss-of-unit scenarios.
  • Use Building Management Systems (BMS) and Building Automation Systems (BAS) to verify setpoints, control logic, and system performance.
  • Troubleshoot failed test steps and help identify whether issues are related to equipment installation, controls, or testing conditions.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and other technical personnel to address deficiencies and complete testing.

Develop Test Procedures and Document Results

  • Review mechanical drawings, equipment specifications, submittals, and Sequences of Operation.
  • Assist with developing and updating mechanical commissioning test scripts and checklists.
  • Identify potential issues or inconsistencies in system documentation before testing begins.
  • Collect and analyze field data, equipment readings, and system trend information.
  • Maintain accurate commissioning documentation, including test results, photographs, and deficiency reports.
  • Track open issues and coordinate corrective actions through verified resolution.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for customer review.
  • Provide accurate updates on testing progress, outstanding issues, and project completion.

Provide Technical Direction and Support

  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to entry-level commissioning engineers working on assigned projects.
  • Assign testing activities, review work, and help ensure procedures are followed correctly.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers in equipment testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and site safety.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for contractors, vendors, and other site personnel.
  • Participate in customer commissioning meetings and communicate progress on assigned systems.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow all site-specific safety requirements.

This position includes technical leadership responsibilities but does not require formal personnel management.

Manage Your Assigned Work and Continue Developing

  • Take ownership of assigned commissioning activities from initial setup through testing, documentation, and closeout.
  • Coordinate equipment readiness, contractor participation, and testing schedules.
  • Monitor progress against project schedules and communicate potential delays or concerns.
  • Track time and resources associated with assigned commissioning work.
  • Continue developing technical knowledge of mission-critical mechanical systems and commissioning practices.
  • Pursue relevant professional development and commissioning certifications.

What We're Looking For

Our ideal candidate has:

  • 2–4 years of relevant technical experience, including approximately 1–2 years of direct mechanical commissioning experience, OR 3+ years of closely related experience in HVAC, mechanical controls, equipment startup, test and balance, or mechanical field engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with commercial or industrial HVAC and mechanical cooling systems.
  • Ability to independently execute mechanical functional performance tests, including setup, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
  • Familiarity with mechanical systems commonly used in data centers and other mission-critical facilities.
  • Working knowledge of BMS/BAS controls and the ability to interpret system operating sequences and trend data.
  • Experience using field testing equipment, such as temperature and humidity probes, airflow measurement devices, manometers, and power meters.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, contractors, vendors, and other engineers.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when documenting technical work.
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for assigned projects.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet customer site access and security requirements.

An engineering degree is NOT required. An associate or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC technology, or a related technical field is valued, but equivalent hands-on technical experience will be considered.

Additional Experience We'd Value

  • Direct experience performing Level 4 (L4) functional performance testing or Level 5 (L5) integrated systems testing.
  • Previous commissioning experience in data centers or other mission-critical facilities.
  • Experience troubleshooting chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH units, or complex HVAC controls.
  • Experience developing or modifying commissioning test scripts.
  • Experience directing or mentoring junior technicians or engineers.
  • Commissioning credentials such as CBCP, CxA, BCxP, or CCP.
  • OSHA 30 training and familiarity with NFPA 70E and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • OSHA 10 certification is required within the first 30 days of employment.

Other Backgrounds We'll Consider

We recognize that qualified commissioning professionals may come from a variety of technical backgrounds. Candidates with experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Commercial or industrial HVAC service and troubleshooting
  • Mechanical equipment startup and testing
  • Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Mechanical controls and system integration
  • Test and balance (TAB)
  • Mechanical field engineering
  • Data center facilities operations and maintenance

If your background is in one of these areas, we're particularly interested in your hands-on experience testing equipment, troubleshooting systems, interpreting control sequences, and taking responsibility for technical work.

Candidates with strong mechanical experience who are ready to expand their commissioning responsibilities are encouraged to apply.

What We're Looking For Beyond Technical Skills

We're looking for someone who:

  • Takes ownership. You're comfortable being responsible for assigned work and following through until it's complete.
  • Enjoys troubleshooting. You like figuring out why something isn't working and finding practical solutions.
  • Works independently. You can follow established procedures, make sound technical judgments, and recognize when to escalate an issue.
  • Pays attention to detail. You understand that accurate testing and documentation are critical in mission-critical environments.
  • Communicates effectively. You're comfortable working with contractors, customers, vendors, and other technical professionals.
  • Supports others. You're willing to share your knowledge and help less-experienced engineers develop their skills.
  • Wants to grow. You're interested in expanding your technical expertise and building a long-term career in commissioning.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $77,000–$104,000 annually, depending on experience, technical background, and qualifications.

TechSite offers:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement plans
  • Paid time off
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Opportunities for professional development and advancement
  • Exposure to complex mechanical systems and mission-critical data center projects
  • The opportunity to take ownership of technical work while learning from experienced commissioning professionals

Work Environment and Schedule

This is a primarily field-based position supporting data center and mission-critical facility projects throughout Central Ohio.

  • Approximately 75% of work is performed at customer sites.
  • Remaining time involves commissioning planning, documentation, and reporting.
  • Typical on-site hours are between 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • Occasional extended hours may be necessary based on project schedules.
  • Travel outside Central Ohio may be required as the company grows.
  • Administrative work may occasionally be performed from a TechSite office or from home, but this is not a remote position.

The position involves working in active construction and mechanical equipment environments, using required PPE, climbing ladders, working from lifts, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Work may involve extended standing, walking, kneeling, confined spaces, and varying temperatures.

Why TechSite?

At TechSite, you'll have the opportunity to develop your expertise in a specialized technical field while working on challenging projects in the rapidly growing data center industry. You'll have the independence to manage your own commissioning activities, the opportunity to solve complex technical problems, and the chance to help develop less-experienced engineers. We're a growing company where technical expertise, teamwork, initiative, and quality work are valued.

If you have hands-on mechanical systems experience and are ready to take greater ownership of commissioning activities, we'd like to hear from you. Apply today!
