Associate Vice President of Finance & Accounting

THE OPPORTUNITY  

BranchED seeks an Associate Vice President of Finance & Accounting (AVPFA) who will build, manage, and support highly effective talent, culture and financial systems at a rapidly growing nonprofit organization with over 25 employees who are committed to shifting the life outcomes of America's young people by ensuring that they have culturally competent quality educators. This position will play a critical role in standardizing our existing systems, policies and procedures to improve and effectively manage BranchED's finances. 

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role will manage the Grants and Contracts Manager and an outsourced accounting resource to support a sound compliance driven internal control environment. The AVPFA will collaborate across the organization with programming teams, work closely with members of the executive team to lead, support high-priority strategic initiatives and the overall day-to-day financial operations for the organization.

The AVPFA is responsible for leading all financial operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, guidingstrategic financial planning, and supporting executive decision-making to maintain the organization's financial health. The AVPFA oversees the organization's accounting and financial functions, guidesthe budgeting processes, creates long-term financial plans, and works collaboratively with the COO and stakeholders (internal/external) to prudently manage the organization's resources and ensure a sound internal control environment. Reporting to the COO, the AVPFA will work collaboratively across the organization with the CEO, Executive leadership, and the organization leaders and team members as appropriate. 

RESPONSIBILITIES  

Leadership   

• Provide inclusive financial leadership to the organization and direct reports ensuring the appropriate financial controls exist to protect the organization's assets. 

• Serve as a thought partner and collaborator with the COO to recommend changes and efficiencies in the organization's control environment. 

• Participate in or lead financial related training as needed to ensure that the organizational stakeholders understand financial, procurement, and control requirements necessary for organizational sustainability.

Accounting Work Streams and Quality Control  

• Serve as lead accountant overseeing the accuracy and maintenance of the subledger and general ledger transactions, accounts receivable, accounts payable, timely month-end closing, and financial statement production consistent with GAAP. 

• Lead, perform, or direct accounting as outlined fiscal policies inclusive of oversight of accounts payable/grants payable, accounts receivable, prepaids, accrued expenses, expense tracking, revenue tracking, investment reconciliation and payroll reconciliation. 

• Lead monthly reconciliation of accounts receivable, accounts payable, grants payable, and payroll reports ensuring the accuracy of ledgers, expenses, receivables, payables and aging schedules, in compliance with contractual obligations. 

• Support and review other support team members' work, reconciling accounts such as bank and credit card, efts, bill entries, and journal entries/cost allocation sheets where necessary. 

• Record incoming revenue, communicate revenue receipts to appropriate parties, reconcilerevenue tracking to reflect most current donor records and provide oversight of conditional revenue workbook and reconciliation. 

• Monitor and manage cash flow to support weekly bill payment cycle and bimonthly payrolloperations. 

• Oversee credit card program usage and reconciliation to ensure compliance with organizational policy and the prevention of fraud and abuse. 

Budget Oversight and Management  

• Lead the preparation and coordination of annual and mid-year budget review processes andensure consistency and compliance with BranchED's financial policies.

• Facilitate budget planning meetings with departments to ensure alignment between financial resources, service delivery goals, and organizational priorities.

• Ensure that departmental resource allocations are aligned with BranchED's strategic plan, and applicable funding guidelines or restrictions.

• Monitor spending throughout the fiscal year and provide regular budget status updates to department leaders; identify and flag emerging pressures or underutilized resources. 

Management for Finance Systems, Software, Resources  

• Troubleshoot and resolve finance systems malfunctions in collaboration with systems consultants. Respond to system errors or system requests of stakeholders in a timely and complete manner. Manage financial systems including but not limited to Sage Intacct, Concur,and other systems containing financial information. 

• Improve and support any software changes or build as needed by engaging consultants, overseeing the project as needed, managing the consultants' deliverables and timeline, ensuring timely response where there is dependency. 

• Manage finance related systems as directed. 

Audit s and Tax Reporting 

• Oversee and lead the preparation of requests by auditors, completion of auditor's template/ workbooks during annual audit and 990 preparations. 

• Serve as an additional contact with the organization's external audit firm. Act as the primary client representative for audit requests with support from the COO. 

• Oversee the annual 1099 process, ensuring 1099s are sent to the correct parties; amounts are accurate for taxable income and deadlines are met in accordance with IRS reporting requirements.

• Review and provide oversight of the Finance Coordinator's work in support of issuing 1099s. 

• Maintain audit-ready financial reporting and lead the completion of the annual audit with zero findings. 

Policies, Procedures and Ad Hoc Reporting  

• In collaboration with COO, draft and set policy and processes as necessary to ensure clear communication of processes across the org and quality control. 

• Support the COO in ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations related to non-profit finance, managing the risk of financial fraud, and other measures to maintain organizational good standing. 

• Responsible for closely collaborating with the organizational stakeholders on ad hoc projects. 

Qualifications  

• Master's degree in Accounting. 

• 7+ years of experience and a demonstrated track record of expertise and excellence in accounting. Non-profit experience preferred. 

• Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting. 

• Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, accurate information and responsive answers to internal and external stakeholders. 

• High level of accountability, accuracy in accounting work, adapting technology solutions for efficiency, especially when multitasking in a fast-paced environment. 

• Capacity to develop strong relationships with all staff, based on trust, respect, effective communication, and common goals. 

• Demonstrated track record leading in a fast-paced environment and Entrepreneurial mindset with a commitment to preserving a bold, can-do culture that sustains the organization's values. 

• Strong project manager with the ability to manage multiple priorities amid ambiguity, complete overlapping projects on time, and leverage creative thinking and resourcefulness.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office with the ability to produce high-quality work products. 

• Proficiency in Intacct and Concur preferred but not required.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:  

The hiring salary range for this position is $116,000 to $145,000. 

Compensation offers are based on skills, relative work experience, and education. We take into consideration internal equity of our existing team members as part of the offer stage. We typically do not hire at the maximum range in order to allow for salary growth; the range shown reflects minimum to mid-point.
