The nurse-patient ratio is 4 or 5:1 in acute care and 3:1 in the intermediate unit. The unit accommodates both acute care patients and those needing more advanced monitoring. Patients may include those recovering from various surgical procedures, including heart and lung surgeries, and vascular repairs. Nurses will provide care for post-operative patients and those requiring advanced monitoring. Nurse-driven protocols are in place for specific therapies, including heparin regimens. Special equipment used in this role includes arterial lines, chest tubes, and ECG machines. Effective interpretation and management of dysrhythmias are essential skills for this position. Nurses must be prepared to float within their scope of practice as needed. The position requires adherence to strict patient care policies and protocols.
