Softgoods Lab Deputy Manager

Job Overview Softgoods Lab Deputy Manager will support daily Softgoods design and fabrication tasks while overseeing lab operations, personnel coordination, and technical functions. The role collaborates closely with NASA partners, cross‑functional engineering teams, and staff to ensure effective planning, execution, and documentation of Softgoods development and fabrication activities. Key Responsibilities Provide daily oversight of lab personnel, workflow, and operational activities. Coordinate with NASA Civil Servants, Branch Chiefs, and Division Chiefs. Assist with forecasting work requirements, budget needs, and resource allocations for JETS TO managers. Participate in recruitment, interviewing, and selection of new SGL employees in partnership with HR. Contribute to the development, documentation, and improvement of training materials and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Train new employees on SOPs and maintain adherence to flight hardware quality standards. Provide weekly project status updates to NASA customers and JETS Program Managers. Ensure employee compliance with mandatory trainings and timely timecard submissions. Conduct daily team briefings to communicate tasks, deadlines, and priorities. Track current and upcoming Softgoods tasks, deadlines, and workload distribution. Monitor work assignments and support task progress and completion. Evaluate new tasks, including material needs, schedules, and cost estimates. Maintain sewing machines and laboratory equipment, including calibration schedules. Schedule tasks while prioritizing spaceflight and training hardware requirements. Support ISO 9000 procedures and NASA/JSC design and fabrication standards. Perform safety walkthroughs, identify hazards, and support corrective actions. Implement and coordinate safe‑operations procedures and safety analyses for SGL activities. Track inventory, storage, labeling, and material control per JSC requirements. Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams such as Materials, Stress, Manufacturing, Electrical, Thermal, and Drafting/Checking. Develop and implement process improvements and cost‑saving strategies. Recommend technical training and professional development for Softgoods designers. Recommend equipment upgrades to enhance Softgoods Lab capabilities. Manage flight material and hardware inventory. Procure materials required for prototyping and fabrication activities. Promote and participate in innovation initiatives and skill‑advancement efforts. Prepare and submit the weekly Softgoods Lab Activity Report (WAR). Requirements High School diploma with 15 years of related experience, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology (or related field) with 10 years of related experience. Experience in Softgoods, textiles, prototyping, or hardware fabrication environments. Experience supporting technical teams, workflows, or laboratory operations. Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills. Ability to interpret and follow SOPs, work instructions, and quality requirements. Proficiency with standard office and documentation tools. Proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency may be required; successful candidates must complete a U.S. government background investigation. Capacity to work primarily in an office environment but also able to perform outside work, sit or stand for extended periods, and lift up to 25 lbs. Preferred Qualifications Experience in NASA, aerospace, government, or other regulated environments. Knowledge of NASA/JSC processes, configuration management practices, and flight‑hardware requirements. Experience with Rhino, AutoCAD, and other CAD software tools. Familiarity with ISO 9000 or related quality‑management systems. Experience coordinating small technical teams or managing work assignments.
