Position Summary

We are seeking a vibrant, hands-on HR Director to lead and personally execute our HR function. This is not a purely strategic or oversight role - the ideal candidate is a working leader who will roll up their sleeves to handle employee relations matters directly, drive engagement, retention and recognition initiatives, oversee performance management and coaching, administer the employee benefits program, understand and work collaboratively with payroll and compensation, and ensure ongoing compliance with employment regulations. This role is critical to support our workforce as we navigate the demands of a fast-paced serious illness environment.

Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations

• Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, conflict resolution, and workplace investigations
• Provide hands-on coaching and support to managers on employee-related matters
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and compliant workplace culture

Performance Management

• Own the performance review process end-to-end, including tools, timelines, and manager training
• Partner directly with department leaders on performance improvement plans and goal setting
• Serve as trusted and impartial advisor and provide effective leadership through communicating performance expectations and providing feedback on performance
• Responsible for HR related policies, procedures and consistent practices
• Provide analysis and reporting of HR key metrics

Engagement, Retention & Recognition

• Design and personally lead employee retention strategies tailored to healthcare/non-profit staff
• Develop and run recognition programs to support morale and engagement
• Monitor turnover trends and implement targeted interventions

Benefits & Compensation

• Oversee and ensure successful programs related to the employee benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, life, ancillary benefits
• Act as an administrator and primary point of contact for the 403(b) Retirement Plan
• Directly manage payroll processing and ensure compliance by understanding the full cycle process
• Work collaboratively with the Payroll Administrator and act as back up as needed
• Administer and maintain competitive compensation structures and benefits programs
• Conduct periodic salary benchmarking and equity analyses

Employment Regulations & Compliance

• Ensure organizational compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, HIPAA-related HR matters, etc.)
• Maintain up-to-date policies, employee handbooks, and required labor postings
• Manage audits, reporting, and risk mitigation related to HR compliance

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; master's degree preferred
• 7+ years of progressive HR experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role; healthcare or non-profit experience strongly preferred
• SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR certification strongly preferred
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with payroll systems (ADP), HRIS platforms, and compensation analysis
• Strong working knowledge of employment law and regulatory compliance
• Enthusiastic team leader with a strong drive to create a positive and dynamic work environment
• Excellent interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and communication skills
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, resource-conscious non-profit environment, balancing strategic thinking with direct, hands-on execution
• High proficiency with Microsoft 365
