Laboratory Support Technician

Overview POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Microbiology Laboratory Manager, the laboratory support technician (LST) is responsible for providing quality customer oriented laboratory services including specimen processing and related specialized procedures, and service to effectively communicate information to users of the Laboratory Services in order to ensure the department is able to operate efficiently and to successfully fulfill its mission. LST's also provide training and guidance to less experienced laboratory support technicians. Position: Laboratory Support Technician Department: Microbiology Lab Schedule: Full Time, 40 Hours, Days Responsibilities Specimen Processing Understands study protocols and processes specimens accordingly. Prepares the workstation with all essential supplies to ensure smooth processing of specimens. Receives and verifies identification of specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures. Labels specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures. Distributes specimens to appropriate lab sections within specified time frames. Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, and follows all special handling instructions. Processes, prepares, and stores specimens for send out to reference laboratories. Processes all types of body specimens; monitors and records daily temperatures; performs scheduled maintenance of equipment. Customer Service and Communication Communicates and cooperates to improve patient services and the quality of each patient's experience. Demonstrates excellent communication skills with patients, staff members, and phone customers. Establishes positive, professional relationships with coworkers and managers to enhance the efficient operation of the department. Delivers reports in a timely fashion. Respects and follows BMC's rules of confidentiality; follows department policy for telephone handling; completes logs for documentation and troubleshooting; communicates with supervisor. Incorporates Medical Center Values into all undertakings. Teamwork Manages time appropriately and meets standards for attendance and punctuality. Acts as a representative and ambassador of Laboratory Medicine at patient care units. Follows department guidelines for dress code and participates in department meetings; documents reviews. Performs special procedures as requested by supervisors, assistants, and specialists. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Information Systems Utilizes technical training and acquires knowledge of the Sunquest LIS and its functions. Performs Sunquest order/entry, inquiry, crediting, and other basic LIS functions. Performs patient registration functions including information updates, and assigns medical record numbers; ensures current information in the master patient index. Training Assists in training new lab support technicians and students. Commits to self-development by attending one BMC training session per year. Qualifications Education : High School Diploma or GED. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred. Experience : One year of Phlebotomy, EKG, and/or specimen processing experience preferred; Microbiology planting, plating and accessioning. Compensation Range: $20.12 - $26.02.
