About the Market Development Team

The Market Development department designs and enhances the rules that support open, competitive, transparent, and economically efficient markets for energy, capacity, and ancillary services in New England. The team evaluates proposed market changes, analyzes market performance, and develops data-driven improvements to support reliable and efficient electricity markets. This work blends technical analysis, data engineering, simulation, economics, and market design—making it an ideal environment for students who want to apply quantitative skills to meaningful energy challenges.

What You’ll Work On

This internship is designed for a highly technical, analytically curious student who is excited to apply coding, statistics, and data skills to electricity market simulation and decision support. You’ll contribute to practical projects that help the department explore market design questions, improve analytical workflows, and communicate simulation results more effectively.

Projects may include:

• Developing prototypes, pilot tools, or proof-of-concept solutions to improve analysis workflows.
• Creating dashboard concepts, exploratory visualizations, and analytical outputs for simulation and market results.
• Supporting coding, data preparation, and analysis for market design or simulation studies.
• Transforming complex datasets into usable insights for internal decision-making.
• Contributing to tools and workflows that may later be further developed in collaboration with IT or other business areas.

You’ll gain hands-on experience with real analytical and development challenges in the electricity market space, including exposure to simulation, dispatch logic, market analytics, data workflows, and internal tool development. The experience is designed to help you build marketable technical skills while contributing to work that matters.

This is a coding-intensive internship focused on practical problem-solving, quantitative analytics, and tool development. You’ll help turn complex data into actionable information, support cross-functional projects, design efficient data workflows, and produce clear outputs for both technical and business audiences.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Your work will help accelerate analytical efforts connected to integrated market simulation and multi-interval dispatch initiatives. By bringing strong coding, data, and visualization skills to the team, you’ll help increase capacity for experimentation, process improvement, and faster insight generation.

In this role, you may help the team:

• Develop early-stage prototypes and proof-of-concept tools more quickly.
• Create pilot dashboards or exploratory visual products that improve how results are reviewed and communicated.
• Support senior economists and analysts with data preparation, coding, and structural analysis.
• Expand the department’s ability to test ideas, streamline workflows, and improve analytical processes.

What We’re Looking For

• Currently pursuing a master’s degree in statistics, data science, computer science, economics, engineering, mathematics, operations research, or another relevant quantitative field.
• Strong coding skills, with Python required.
• Working knowledge of SQL for querying, transforming, and analyzing large datasets.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including comfort working with structured data, identifying patterns, and translating questions into analytical approaches.
• Familiarity with quantitative concepts such as regression, statistics, hypothesis testing, or related analytical methods.
• Ability to communicate findings clearly through writing, visuals, and presentations.
• Preferred experience with R or SAS.
• Preferred experience with Git or other version control tools.

The expected hourly range for this position is $19-$36 per hour, depending on your year in college. Interns are eligible for some paid time off benefits and have access to our wellness program. Our internships also provide interns with exposure to the energy industry, mentorships, and real-world experience.

This is a U.S. based role. If the successful candidate resides outside of the U.S., relocation will be required.

To be eligible for an internship with ISO New England, a candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
