Disaster Recovery Specialist Client : DC Government Location : Washington, DC (Hybrid on-site 3x/week) Responsibilities Conduct risk assessments and business impact analyses to identify vulnerable areas within critical functions. Recommend and implement disaster avoidance and impact reduction strategies. Coordinate with IT and other key personnel to assess how hardware or software changes affect the disaster recovery plan. Direct and coordinate staff efforts to formulate department‑specific disaster recovery plans. Research emerging products, services, protocols, and standards to support contingency planning. Negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to obtain protection services and products. Download and test new disaster recovery software and technologies. Recommend, schedule, and perform necessary security improvements, upgrades, or purchases. Develop and establish procedures for restoring mission‑critical applications during natural disasters, technical failures, power outages, and human interference. Manage and coordinate all aspects of actual recovery implementation, including initial emergency response, recovery procedures, and business resumption processes. Maintain and enforce policies, procedures, and plans for disaster recovery administration and business continuity based on industry best practices. Train staff on their responsibilities concerning business continuity procedures and emergency response. Ensure equipment, systems, services, and facilities comply with disaster recovery plans and procedures. Maintain hard copies and backup equipment to preserve vital information. Conduct simulations and test runs to revise and perfect plans. Assess and execute required security reconfigurations. Recommend, schedule, and apply fixes, security patches, and other measures during business disruption. Investigate and select off‑site storage locations for data and backups. Keep current with emerging security alerts and issues. Manage and/or provide guidance to junior team members. Education Master’s Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science, or a Bachelor’s degree plus a combination of education and 10 years of work experience. DR/BCP certification in specialized areas (required). Qualifications Minimum 3 years of experience designing and maintaining public/government cloud solutions focused on Microsoft Azure IaaS, PaaS, and related services. Minimum 3 years of experience managing Windows and Linux servers and services. Broad hands‑on knowledge of disaster recovery planning and industry standards. In‑depth knowledge of disaster types and their impacts on technology. Technical knowledge of current systems, software, hardware, protocols, and standards. Strong knowledge of network administration and protocols. Solid project management skills. Knowledge of property and casualty insurance. Knowledge of applicable data privacy and protection practices and laws. Excellent technical architecture skills, including migration of on‑prem VMware to Azure. Knowledge of network technologies related to AWS. Strong interpersonal, oral communication, and analytical problem‑solving skills.
