MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Position Summary Title: Medical Assistant Department: School of Medicine / Ambulatory Operations Location: UTRGV Campus, 1201 W. University Drive, Edinburg, TX 78539 FTE: 1.0 (Full‑Time, Non‑Exempt) Posting Number: SRGV8528 Posting Date: 02/27/2025 Responsibilities Intake patients in clinic setting: obtain vital signs, surgical/medical history, chief complaint, medications, and allergies; document in the Electronic Health Record. Report pertinent findings to the inter‑professional team; prepare charts and provide physicians with required test and lab results. Answer patient messages and telephone inquiries; triage calls; handle medication refills or requests via clinic policy. Assist patients with appointments and laboratory questions; communicate all necessary patient information to the team in a timely manner. Perform full registration of new patients and update existing patient information in the practice management system. Conduct simple diagnostic tests, collect specimens, draw blood, sterilize and clean equipment, and maintain examination rooms in outpatient settings. Provide routine but complex instructions for patient procedures and treatments per unit guidelines. Problem‑solve issues related to medical information retrieval and coordinate clinical services per payer guidelines. Help maintain acceptable abandonment (no‑show) rates. Perform clinic‑specific telephone functions, including scheduling and message management. May be required to provide coverage at other clinical sites as needed. Perform other duties within the scope and course of this job. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Medical Assistant program. Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration. Related experience in an ambulatory or primary care clinic. Ability to perform all required duties and work in an office or clinical ambulatory patient care facility. Proficiency in both Spanish and English (written and oral). Physical capability to perform routine patient care tasks, including lifting and moving up to 25 lbs. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual proficiency beyond Spanish and English. Experience with mental illness, chronic disease, and appetite‑related disorders. Employment Details Working Conditions: Standard office or clinical ambulatory patient care facility conditions; some evening and/or weekend work and extensive travel within the Rio Grande Valley may be required. Compensation: Minimum Salary Commensurate with Experience. Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; possible evening/weekend shifts.
