Assistant Professor of Social Work

The School of Social Work at the University of Maine seeks applicants for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position. The candidate will teach and advise in the undergraduate and graduate social work programs and establish an independent research and scholarship program. Additional responsibilities include student advising and service within the School, University and broader communities. Consistent with the University of Maine’s mission, the candidate will conduct research and provide guidance to the state on social welfare and social work-related programs and policies. With a 75% teaching and 25% research appointment, the successful candidate will teach in the on-campus Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs. Potential teaching assignments include required courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in two or more curricular areas including clinical practice, human behavior in the social environment, macro practice, research, and social welfare policy. The candidate will provide academic advising to undergraduate and graduate students and take leadership roles in recruitment and mentoring students, ensuring our educational programs remain vibrant, rigorous, and competitive. Successful candidates will engage in service to the School, University, and relevant professional communities. They will also have the training and motivation to conduct independent research on social issues of societal importance in Maine and beyond, with demonstrated record of publication and potential for securing external funding. The degree must be completed prior to the date of employment; ABD candidates can apply. MSW degree and a minimum of two years of post-MSW social work practice experience; Potential for excellence in research and/or other scholarly activity; Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels; Excellent communication skills; Evidence of the ability to work as a team member; Ability to teach in at least two of the following sequence areas: clinical practice, human behavior in the social environment, macro practice, research, and/or social welfare policy; Interest in pursuing externally funded research; Commitment to advancing social work values, ethics, and anti-oppressive scholarship and practice. Preferred PhD in Social Work; Record of excellence in research and other scholarly activity; Expertise in social work practice (clinical and/or macro) and/or social welfare policy; Experience and/or interest in teaching both in-person and online classes; Experience and/or interest in teaching both undergraduate and graduate-level social work courses; Strong potential for or established record of effectivestudent advising and mentoring.
