Ophthalmic Technician – Eye Care Services

Job Type: Full-Time, Direct-Hire (Permanent placement on company payroll with immediate full benefits;  not a temporary job )

Location: Tarentum, PA 15084 (On-site – periodic travel to regional vision centers required)

Schedule: Monday – Friday, Day Shift (Standard daylight schedule 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, with occasional 7:15 AM start times on a rotating schedule)

New Hire Starting Base Pay: $21.14 – $24.64 per hour (Starting pay based on experience, with clear advancement pathways as you build specialized expertise.)

Future Earning Potential: Established employees have the opportunity to earn progressive pay increases up to $35.13 per hour over time through performance, tenure, and continuous learning.

Mandatory Qualifications

• Education & Training: High School Diploma or equivalent required; completion of the AAO (American Academy of Ophthalmology) Home Study Course highly preferred.
• Clinical Ophthalmology/Optometry Experience: Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Technician, Optometric Assistant, or equivalent combination of clinical education and experience preferred. 
• Specialized Ophthalmic Clinical Competencies: Hands-on experience in the following core technical areas:
  • Vision & Assessment : Distance and near visual acuity, Amsler Grid, color vision, pupil assessment, and vital signs (BP, Height, Weight).
  • Diagnostics & Refraction : Refraction (automated and/or manual), Lensometry (automated and/or manual), Keratometry (automated and/or manual), and Pachymetry.
  • Tonometry & Motility : Pressure checks (Applanation, Tonopen, or Air Puff), Extraocular Motility (EOM), and confrontation fields.
  • Patient Documentation : Detailed history taking (medical, family, ocular, and allergies).

Regional Travel & Flexibility: Ability to travel to neighboring regional vision centers as clinic staffing needs require.

 

How You'll Make an Impact

• Patient Workups & Ocular Assessments: Perform comprehensive initial patient evaluations, documenting chief complaints, ocular/medical histories, visual acuity, glare testing, color vision, and confrontational visual fields.
• Diagnostic Instrument Operation: Utilize specialized eye care equipment including automated/manual lensometers, auto-refractors, ICare/Tonopen tonometers, and Amsler grids.
• Clinical Procedure & Dilation Assistance: Administer physician-directed diagnostic drops, perform pupil dilation, assist ophthalmologists with clinical procedures, and provide contact lens insertion/removal instructions.
• Clinic Operations & Sterilization: Clean, disinfect, and sterilize ophthalmic instruments, restock exam rooms, maintain inventory, and ensure compliance with clinical hygiene standards.
• Multisite Support: Collaborate with eye care teams across the regional network to ensure consistent, high-quality vision care delivery.
