Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist - Kenner - Hematology

This job performs routine and special tests; coordinates the implementation of new procedures; and assumes responsibility for resolving day-to-day lab technical problems and notifies laboratory immediate supervisor or Pathologist as appropriate. It also supervises a department section, coordinates laboratory operations within the section to ensure reliable patient testing and timely services, monitors laboratory-specific performance improvement and quality control activities, exhibits knowledge of and adherence to institution and department policies and procedures, assists the supervisor in maintaining a section that complies with accrediting and regulatory agencies, and keeps patient-related information confidential at all times. Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science. Transcript required. Work Experience Required: 4 years experience (one year in the appropriate clinical lab section) in a laboratory under a qualified Director. If the technologist has rotated in a general lab, the one year of experience in the appropriate section must be documented. If no documentation exists, a signed letter from the laboratory medical director stating the technologist has been deemed competent in that section must be provided. Preferred: Experience in advanced analytical skills necessary to analyze complex data and troubleshoot equipment. Certifications Required: Current state license (if applicable). ASCP, AMT, or AAB certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist. Incumbents certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004 must successfully complete the ASCP Certification Maintenance Program. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Computer skills for data entry and retrieval. Effective verbal and written communication; ability to present information clearly and professionally. Proficiency with Windows-based applications and relevant laboratory software. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a controlled environment following safety measures to minimize exposure to chemicals, body fluids, and bloodborne pathogens. Advanced analytical skills for data collection, calculations, system log maintenance, and operation of laboratory computer equipment. Judgmental skills for problem identification and solution, including handling difficult situations. Stress management skills to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality service. Ability to work independently. Job Duties Coordinate clinical competency in the section. Perform routine and special laboratory procedures. Maintain regulatory compliance and performance improvement. Assist and consult with the laboratory supervisor or director. Maintain competency; meet goals and objectives. Adapt communication and services to patient privacy and needs, including obtaining permissions and explaining procedures. Perform other related duties as required. Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility and ensures compliance with all such laws, regulations, and standards. Physical and Environmental Demands Medium work: occasional lifting of 20–50 pounds, frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds, and sustained minimal force.
