Job Description
Medical Director – Addiction Treatment Services
MD/DO | Addiction Medicine & Behavioral Health
Addiction Treatment Services (ATS) is seeking a collaborative and mission-driven Medical Director (MD/DO) to provide physician leadership and medical oversight across our substance use disorder treatment continuum in Northern Michigan.
This is an opportunity for a physician who is passionate about improving access to evidence-based addiction treatment and wants to help shape an integrated medical model serving individuals across Withdrawal Management, Residential Treatment, and medications for addiction treatment (MAT/MOUD).
The Medical Director serves as ATS's physician-level clinical leader and works closely with advanced practice providers, nursing, clinical leadership, operations, and executive leadership. The position is designed primarily around medical oversight, consultation, quality, regulatory accountability, and physician coverage, rather than routine full-time direct patient care.
Key Responsibilities
The Medical Director will:
· Provide overall physician oversight and clinical direction for ATS medical services.
· Oversee medical services within Withdrawal Management and Residential Treatment.
· Establish, approve, and periodically review medical policies, protocols, standing orders, and clinical procedures.
· Establish and oversee medical admission, exclusion, transfer, and discharge criteria.
· Provide consultation and clinical guidance to APPs and nursing staff, including support for complex medical, psychiatric, withdrawal-management, and medication-related cases.
· Provide or participate in physician-level on-call consultation and ensure appropriate physician coverage arrangements.
· Support safe, evidence-based prescribing practices, including medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders.
· Provide oversight and consultation related to MAT/MOUD services.
· Review significant medical events, hospital transfers, adverse events, and quality-of-care concerns.
· Participate in medical quality assurance, performance improvement, and patient-safety activities.
· Collaborate with nursing, clinical, operational, and executive leadership.
· Participate in credentialing and evaluation of physicians and prescribing clinicians working within ATS medical services.
· Ensure appropriate medical-provider qualifications and competencies.
· Review and approve applicable medical protocols and standing orders.
· Serve as a physician-level resource to hospitals, pharmacies, community providers, and other healthcare partners as appropriate.
· Participate in regulatory surveys, audits, and reviews involving medical services.
· Maintain required medical documentation and participate in clinical record review as required.
· Provide scheduled onsite physician involvement and evaluation consistent with program, regulatory, contractual, and patient-care requirements.
The role is particularly important to ATS's medically monitored Withdrawal Management program. Current requirements include physician telephone availability 24 hours per day, physician availability to assess individuals within required admission timeframes, and availability for onsite monitoring and further evaluation consistent with applicable requirements.
Required Qualifications
· MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
· Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan, or ability to obtain Michigan licensure prior to beginning the position.
· Ability to meet all applicable Michigan requirements to serve as Medical Director of a licensed substance use disorder treatment program.
· Ability to satisfy Michigan's addiction-specific Medical Director qualification requirements, including the applicable addiction-focused continuing medical education pathway if not already board certified.
· DEA registration and appropriate controlled-substance prescribing authority as required for assigned responsibilities.
· Ability to successfully complete required credentialing, payer enrollment, background screening, and exclusion/sanction screening.
· Ability to provide or participate in physician-level consultation and coverage required by ATS programs.
· Commitment to evidence-based, person-centered, recovery-oriented treatment of substance use disorders.
· Strong collaborative and interdisciplinary leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Board certification in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry strongly preferred but not required.
· Experience treating substance use disorders, including alcohol and opioid use disorders.
· Experience with MAT/MOUD.
· Experience with medically monitored Withdrawal Management, Residential Treatment, behavioral health, or a comparable level of care.
· Familiarity with ASAM criteria and Michigan SUD treatment requirements.
· Experience supervising or collaborating with nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants.
· Experience with quality improvement, clinical protocols, regulatory compliance, or healthcare leadership.
· Comfort working with individuals who may have co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions.
Position Structure
ATS is open to developing a structure that works for the right physician. The position may be structured as a part-time employed or contracted Medical Director role, depending upon candidate availability and organizational needs.
The Medical Director will work in partnership with an APP who serves as a primary direct-care medical provider for Withdrawal Management, Residential, and MAT/MOUD services. Nursing provides continuous onsite patient monitoring and bedside clinical care. This structure is intended to allow the Medical Director to focus on physician oversight, consultation, clinical quality, regulatory accountability, and higher-acuity medical decision-making.
Specific expectations regarding onsite availability, scheduled physician services, after-hours consultation, and compensation will be clearly defined as part of the final employment or contractual arrangement.
