Job Description

The Hands-On Fabrication Lead is responsible for leading daily fabrication activities in the shop while directly contributing on the floor as a working lead. This role requires both supervisory skills and hands-on involvement, with the lead expected to spend 30–40% of their time welding, fitting, and addressing production bottlenecks, quality concerns, layout issues, and schedule needs. The Fabricator Lead will collaborate closely with the Shop Foreman, Quality Control, Maintenance, and other department leads to ensure safety, quality, productivity, and on-time delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily fabrication activity for welders and fitters in the shop.
• Spend approximately 30–40% of the time performing hands-on welding/fabrication work to support production needs.
• Assign daily work and reallocate manpower as needed to meet production goals and delivery deadlines.
• Collaborate with the Shop Foreman and other department leads to prioritize jobs, coordinate workflow, and remove production roadblocks.
• Support welders and fitters with print interpretation, layout questions, fit-up concerns, welding technique, and fabrication troubleshooting.
• Enforce company safety policies, shop rules, and quality expectations at all times.
• Monitor work in process to ensure fabrication meets dimensional requirements and welding quality standards.
• Partner with Quality Control to ensure AISC and structural steel quality requirements are met and maintained.
• Assist with dimensional inspections and final quality verification as needed.
• Identify and escalate issues involving safety, quality, materials, equipment, consumables, manpower, or process flow.
• Coordinate with Maintenance to keep fabrication equipment and support equipment operational.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
• Coach, mentor, and develop welders and fitters on performance, work habits, safety, and technical growth.
• Support interviewing, onboarding, training, timecards, discipline, and performance conversations alongside shop leadership.
• Support schedule flexibility, overtime, and Saturday work as required by production demand.

Essential Skills

• At least 3 years of experience successfully leading a steel fabrication team.
• Strong hands-on in structural steel welding, fitting, layout, and fabrication.
• Ability to function as a true working lead, including welding/fabricating 30–40% of the time.
• Knowledge of structural steel materials, shop workflow, welding processes, fabrication methods, and material handling.
• Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and troubleshoot fit-up or print issues on the floor.
• Experience working in a safety-driven, quality-focused fabrication environment.
• Understanding of structural steel quality expectations and dimensional accuracy.
• Familiarity with cost control, production flow, and labor efficiency in a fabrication shop.
• Experience with CNC fabrication equipment and related shop equipment.
• Experience with Tekla EPM/GO preferred.
• Strong communication skills and ability to lead tenured welders/fitters without losing credibility.
• Willingness to work overtime and Saturdays as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Knowledge of fabrication, welding symbols, and blueprint interpretation.
• Experience supervising over 2-3 welding stations.
• Experience with structural drawings and material handling.

The work environment is a safety-driven, quality-focused fabrication shop, equipped with CNC fabrication equipment and other related shop tools. The role requires flexibility in scheduling, including overtime and Saturday work as needed. The facility maintains a clean, organized, and efficient workspace, fostering a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement.

This is a Contract position based out of Cocoa, FL.

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
