Growing together.This leadership role within the UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety (EOHS) organization serves as the enterprise authority for workplace safety and environmental compliance. The Associate Director leads the environmental health and safety team within EOHS Technical Services, providing strategic direction, technical expertise, and governance for the development and deployment of enterprise-wide tools, systems, policies, training, and processes that enable effective implementation of global safety and environmental compliance requirements across UHG operations.Reporting directly to the Sr. Director of Global EOHS Technical Services, the Associate Director is a key member of the EOHS leadership team and acts as UHG's subject matter expert in environmental health and safety regulatory frameworks, exposure science, and environmental risk management. This role is responsible for designing and deploying the systems, standards, and enterprise programs that enable consistent environmental stewardship and protection of worker safety and health.You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.Primary Responsibilities:Environmental, Health and Safety LeadershipProvide expert technical direction for all enterprise workplace safety and environmental compliance programsLead the enterprise industrial hygiene strategy, including exposure assessment, monitoring protocols, sampling strategies (air, water, surface, noise), and control methodologiesEstablish governance for indoor environmental quality across office, operational, and high-risk environmentsOversee development and maintenance of hazardous and regulated waste programsProgram Strategy, Governance & Systems:Develop and execute the enterprise workplace safety, environmental and industrial hygiene strategyLeverage data analytics and technology to enhance EHS visibility and develop tools to proactively reduce operational EHS riskLead creation and maintenance of policies, standards, and technical guidanceRisk Management & Regulatory Responsibilities:Direct workplace safety, environmental and industrial hygiene risk assessments and compliance evaluationsManage regulatory relationships and ensure timely submission of required reports, permits, and notificationsMaintain expert-level knowledge of applicable workplace safety, environmental and occupational health regulationsLeadership, Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:Lead and develop a high-performing team of environmental, health and safety professionalsOversee third-party consultants and vendorsCollaborate with internal partners across the enterpriseDevelop and report enterprise environmental health and safety metrics as applicableManage budgets, resource planning, and long-range capability developmentPerform other duties as assignedYou'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.Required Qualifications:8+ years of experience in EHS, with deep knowledge in Environmental health and safety compliance & industrial hygieneExperience applying environmental health and safety practices in an operational settingDemonstrated success influencing cross-functional stakeholdersDemonstrated analytical and systems skillsDemonstrated Excellent communication skillsAbility to travel as requiredPreferred Qualifications:Professional credentials (CIH, CSP, CHMM, PE, or equivalent)3+ years leading high-performing technical teamsExperience in large, complex, or highly regulated industriesDemonstrated success leading organizational change and scaling programsDemonstrated ability to shape conceptual thoughts into practical enablement tools for operations*All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter PolicyPay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
