Job Description

The Maintenance Mechanic supports daily production by responding to equipment breakdowns and ensuring machinery operates safely and efficiently. This role focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical and electrical systems in a wood pallet manufacturing environment, following OEM manuals and preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and support operational goals.

Responsibilities

• Respond to daily production needs and equipment breakdowns to support operational goals and minimize downtime.

• Perform mechanical and electrical repairs on all machinery and production equipment, including saws and related systems.

• Maintain equipment in accordance with OEM manuals and established preventive maintenance programs.

• Troubleshoot and repair motors, belts, chains, gears, bearings, hydraulics, and other mechanical components.

• Read and interpret electrical schematics to diagnose and resolve electrical issues.

• Work safely on 120V single-phase and 480V three-phase motors, including troubleshooting and repairs.

• Support and maintain manufacturing systems involving hydraulics, pneumatics, air compressors, chains, and bearings.

• Troubleshoot PLCs on equipment that uses programmable logic controllers within the plant.

• Perform fabrication tasks as needed, including MIG and stick welding, to repair or modify equipment and structures.

• Apply technical knowledge to maintain and troubleshoot building systems such as electrical, plumbing, and heating.

• Inspect, maintain, and repair forklifts, including propane and industrial units, to ensure safe operation.

• Diagnose and resolve issues with air compressors, including reading manuals, addressing coil problems, and managing temperature control.

• Work effectively in a sawmill or wood production environment, ensuring equipment is safe and functional.

• Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to prioritize repair work and communicate equipment status.

• Follow all safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and contribute to a safe working environment.

Essential Skills

• Strong mechanical repair skills with experience working on industrial machinery and production equipment.

• Proven troubleshooting abilities for motors, belts, chains, gears, bearings, hydraulics, and related mechanical systems.

• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics accurately.

• Understanding of the difference between 120V single-phase and 480V three-phase motors.

• Hands-on experience working on 480V three-phase motors.

• Manufacturing environment experience, preferably in wood production or similar industrial settings.

• Knowledge and experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, air compressors, chains, and bearings.

• Experience troubleshooting PLCs on production equipment.

• Technical knowledge of building systems, including electrical, plumbing, and heating.

• Experience working on forklifts, including propane and industrial units.

• Experience with air compressors, including reading manuals, addressing coil issues, and managing temperature control.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bilingual Spanish/English communication skills.

• Fabrication and welding experience, including MIG and stick welding.

• Experience working in a sawmill or wood production environment.

• Ability to work independently and manage multiple maintenance tasks in a large, spread-out facility.

• Strong attention to safety and adherence to established procedures.

• Effective communication skills to collaborate with production and maintenance teams.

Work Environment

This role is based in a wood pallet manufacturing facility with an indoor/outdoor environment. All manufacturing equipment is housed in covered buildings that are not climate controlled, so you should be comfortable working in varying temperatures. The plant is very spread out, and the position requires frequent walking between buildings and being on your feet throughout the shift. The work schedule is an overnight shift from 11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The dress code includes jeans, a T-shirt, steel-toe footwear, safety glasses, and a safety vest, with adherence to all safety requirements while working around industrial machinery and equipment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of ASHLAND, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $36.00/hr.
