Job Title: MICU Driver
Overview
0.9FTE, 36 hours per week. Primarily evening & nights shifts with occasional day shifts mixed in. Every third weekend & holidays on rotation. On-call required (2-3 on call shifts every 6 weeks).
Min. pay is $22/hr. plus shift differentials.
Provides transportation and support to the Transport Program and fleet of Mobile Intensive Care Units. Obtains information from Transport Team, NCH Dispatch, and Patient Consult Transfer Center (PCTC) on requests for transports and mobilizes the MICU for pending trips. The driver will provide maintenance, inspection, inventory and cleaning of the MICU. Assist Transport Team with only those skills listed in principal duties when requested to aid in stabilization of patients at a referral hospital under the direct supervision of a Transport Clinician or physician. Will assist in maintaining all department, state, and national data collection and records. Participate in preparedness and inspections for the department and the fleet of vehicles.

Responsibilities
- Drive the ambulances to and from referring hospitals, clinics, and outpatient centers.
- Assists with the planning of the transport team activities in accordance with established written guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- In conjunction with the Physician Consult Transfer Center (PCTC) and Dispatch; organize rapid transport mobilization and assures appropriate utilization of resources. Is responsible for evaluation and monitoring weather conditions throughout shift to preplan for anticipated trips throughout region.
- Providing Family Centered Care, crisis intervention, support, and education to the family of the critically ill patient.
- Assist with office duties as requested.
- Provides daily fleet and equipment inspection as well as shift briefings at the start of each shift.
- Provides cleaning and maintenance of equipment, supplies, and ambulances necessary to transport system.
- Maintains safety of patients and transport team in accordance with driving and transport guidelines.
- Identifies system problems for research and assists in research activities of the transport program.
- Continually evaluates methods of practice, recommends changes and modifications to improve the department and patient outcomes.
- Actively participates in the unit committees and projects to assure daily operation and growth of the Transport Program.
- Establishes professional objectives, evaluates self and peers, and shares progress with the Transport Supervisor and Program Manager.
- Attends and actively participates in monthly staff meetings.
- Attends and actively participates in hospital based committees and projects.
- Successfully completes quarterly skills and recertification requirements.
- Attends neonatal and pediatric education opportunities designed for/or relevant to transport personnel.
- Actively pursues own professional growth through attendance at conferences, educational activities, and through continual review and sharing of professional experiences.
- Functions as a resource to referral staff, Nationwide Children's staff, and the community.
- Functions as a team member performing other related duties as assigned.
- Supports the mission, vision, values of the organization and the department.
- Assists with orientation of new Transport Team personnel.
After demonstration and completion of skill competencies, will be able to perform additional procedures and duties as requested under the direction/supervision of a Transport Clinician and/or Physician:
- Diagnostic Procedures-
- 12 lead EKG
- Rhythm strip
- Cardiac monitoring, identifies lethal arrhythmias
- Pulse Oximetry reading and monitoring
- Interventions -
- Apply C-Spine and spinal immobilization
- Splints to suspected or actual fractures
- Orthopedic dressing-clavicle strap, cervical collars, slings, ACE wraps
- Cardiac monitor electrodes
- Oxygen saturation probe
- Provides aerosol treatments
- Performs oral and endotracheal suctioning
- Administer oxygen therapy by mask or nasal cannula
- Cleans wounds and applies sterile and non-sterile dressing
- Initiates peripheral intravenous therapy and locks in accordance with Nationwide Children's Hospital policies and Transport guidelines.
- Operates IV pump and regulates infusion of standard IV fluids, IV fluids with KCL additive.
- Instills heparin or saline for peripheral lock in accordance to policy
- Performs Basic Life support measures, bag valve mask ventilation-intubated and non-intubated patients.
- Under the directions/supervision of a Transport Clinician, Registered Nurse and/or Physician perform patient assessment after initial triage.
- Utilizes clinical judgement, reports changes
- Measures and documents patient vital signs
- Establishes priorities of patient care
- Collects patient data, procedures performed and response to therapy
- Maintains patient safety and care using evidence based practice in accordance with the written guidelines and polices of the Transport Program within the framework of the policies, procedures, and standards set forth by Nationwide Children's Hospital, and the Division of Patient Care Services. With documented training, competently performs stabilization and resuscitation of the critically ill patient and under the direct supervision of the Transport Clinician or physician.
- Certifications required: BLS, NRP, PALS or PEPP, ACLS, and trauma certification preferably before completion of orientation but within 1 year of orientation.
- Certified by the State of Ohio as an EMT-P (Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic).
- Current Ohio Driver's license.
- Must pass driving qualifications and training set forth by Nationwide Children's Transport Team.
- Must pass motor vehicle background inspection and insurance coverage eligibility (E-21).
- Minimum of 1 year experience driving emergency vehicles and prefer a minimum of 1 year pediatric patient care experience or 6 months transport experience and training
- Demonstrates self-motivation, sensitivity, leadership, interpersonal skills, teaching ability, organization, and high level of critical thinking and decision making.
- Demonstrate ability to work under stress using sound judgment.
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and basic computer knowledge.
- Remain qualified by current Nationwide Children's Insurance guidelines.

- Must be able to lift up to 165 pounds and pull/push 300 pound isolette with assistance.
- Must be able to see, hear, stand, walk, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation; and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.
- Must be able to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with the assistance of another person(s) and/or equipment
