UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic II .

Work Schedule

• Full time, Monday through Friday, 6:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
• This position is based at the Plant Services Building on the Seattle campus.

About this opportunity

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor II and receiving day-to-day direction from the assigned lead, the Maintenance Mechanic II performs semi-skilled construction, alteration, installation, and repair work across multiple building trades. The position supports renovation and construction projects throughout University facilities and works collaboratively with journey-level trades, other UW Facilities shops, and campus partners to safely and efficiently complete building alterations and improvements.

Key Responsibilities – 100%

Building Alterations and Construction

• Perform semi-skilled building alteration, construction, installation, repair, and renovation work across multiple trades, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work.
• Patch, repair, and paint walls and other surfaces; remove, repair, and replace ceiling tiles, flooring, floor coverings, and related building finishes.
• Repair, replace, adjust, and install doors, windows, screens, door closers, and other building components and hardware.
• Perform minor plumbing alterations, installations, and repairs, including faucets, shower heads, drains, shower sweeps, and other plumbing fixtures and components.
• Perform minor electrical alterations and repairs within the scope of the position, including replacement of lamps, ballasts, and similar electrical components.
• Perform machinery mechanic work as required, including repair and replacement of motors, drive belts, and related components on air handling and other mechanical equipment; perform repairs and modifications to boilers, kitchen equipment, exhaust fans, and other building equipment.

Project Support and Coordination

• Assist and coordinate with journey-level personnel and other trades on alteration, renovation, and construction projects; may instruct semi-skilled workers as assigned.
• Determine material, equipment, and tool needs for assigned work; communicate project status and work progress to the supervisor and coordinate with other UW Facilities shops to sequence and facilitate completion of work.
• Operate hand and power tools, forklifts, scissor lifts, UW vehicles, and other equipment; load, unload, transport, and stage tools, equipment, materials, and supplies at job sites.
• Provide excellent customer service through courteous, professional, and effective interactions with clients, colleagues, and the campus community.

Safety and Compliance

• Know and comply with occupational health and safety requirements applicable to the work, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs), and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Comply with UW and UW Facilities policies, procedures, and M&C protocols; participate in required meetings, training, and process improvement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-journey status in a union; OR four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing building alterations, construction, renovation, and repair work in a commercial, institutional, healthcare, or higher education environment.
• Working knowledge and experience across multiple building trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general building systems.
• Experience using hand and power tools and operating equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and other equipment used in building alteration and construction work.
• Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.
• Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others, and as a member of a team.
• Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.

Working Conditions

• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
• May be required to accept variable work shift.
• Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
• Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.
• Must wear approved footwear while performing assigned work.
• Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
• Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center
• Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.

UW Facilities (UWF) manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a diverse set of roles. Our organization is comprised of multiple groups including Operations, Asset Management, Campus Energy Utilities & Operations, and other smaller units. Operations is the largest group in UWF and has the most direct responsibility for ensuring the University is ready for business each day. Operations includes Building Services Department, Maintenance & Construction, Transportation Services, and Regulated Materials.

Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair, and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, as well as logistics, moving, and disposal of surplus equipment and furniture.
