Join a dedicated healthcare team in the heart of the Midwest region, where your role as a Laboratory Assistant I is vital to supporting life-saving diagnostics. This position involves performing specific pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical tasks with precision and care. You will prioritize incoming specimens, ensure accuracy of physician orders, generate and attach labels correctly, and distribute specimens promptly while communicating any urgent requests to technologists. Your responsibilities include resolving processing conflicts, performing microbiology setups during certain shifts, and managing specimen processing inquiries. Quality control is a key part of your duties, and you will notify supervisors of any irregularities. You will also collect chain of custody drug screens, follow glucose tolerance testing protocols, and verify specimen types and volumes. Maintaining inventory of reference laboratory supplies and ensuring cleanliness and organization of your work area are essential. Specimen collection will be performed using venipuncture, capillary puncture, or arterial methods, always following strict protocols to minimize patient discomfort and ensure accuracy. Safety practices and hand hygiene are paramount, as is treating patients and colleagues with dignity and respect.

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Experience: Minimum of one year experience as a phlebotomist or laboratory assistant is required.

Certification/License: No certification required, but PBT (ASCP) preferred.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Requires close mental and visual attention for short periods. Approximately 50% of the time is spent standing and walking throughout the department and facility. Must be able to lift or carry up to 20 lbs.

Working Conditions: Frequent exposure to infectious materials. Work environment is air-conditioned with moderate noise levels. Flexibility to work various shifts may be required.
