Position Overview This position is accountable for performing inspections, sampling, testing, documentation and reporting to ensure that all aggregate produced by a source meet the requirements of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), are of good quality and specified gradation, and are also produced in accordance with the Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS), and the Standard Specifications and Special Provisions. Essential Functions

Inspects aggregate material and aggregate sources and monitors plant operation to ensure that the aggregate produced meets the specifications required for each individual project. Maintains complete and accurate material testing records. Prepare complete and accurate reports for Construction and Materials Management System (CMMS) and other reporting systems. Acquires a working knowledge of a wide variety of inspection and testing procedures, specifications, and checklists. Observes and verifies compliance of aggregate producers with the department’s Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS) program, as well as the Manual for Aggregate Inspection. Knowledgeable of the production and sampling of recycled concrete and slag aggregates and requirements of accepting virgin and processed materials. Perform duties in the resolution of material deficiencies and the proper documentation of material exceptions. Minimizes production of marginal or unacceptable material by overseeing manufacturing procedures to assure compliance with approved standards in the AGCS programs. Maintains effective working relationships with material producers to ensure that only proper quality material is delivered to Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) contracts. Assists in calibrating and maintaining laboratory testing equipment to ensure information is accurate. Obtains any needed certification and perform the required inspections on new products and raw feed as required within the specifications. Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS thirty months of engineering experience; OR Six years of engineering experience. Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of the Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS) program, the Standard Specifications, and the Special Provisions. Strong communication skills. Strong resolution and problem-solving skills. Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of the IDOT Management Training Program for 5-day Aggregates (CET 021) or 3-day Aggregates (CET 020) with the 2-day upgrade (CET 027) within 12 months of hire. Successful completion of IDOT Quality Management Training Program for both PCC Level I, II and III and HMA Level I, II, and III (formerly known as QC/QA HMA Level I, II, and PCC Level I, II, and III) within 36 months of hire. Valid driver’s license. Extensive travel. Occasional night work. Occasional overtime. Ability to lift materials up to 50 pounds. Successful completion of a background screening. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. Successful completion of pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with USDOT standards which prohibit the use of cannabis.
