Educational Support Professional: Bus AssistantResponsible for the care and control of students when loading, unloading and during the transporting process on the school bus.Essential Job FunctionsMonitor the boarding and departure of students on the busEnsures that students are safely seated (seat belts, safety vests, car seats) and that wheelchairs are securely tied-down when requiredPerforms daily pre-trip checks on wheelchair tie-down systems and adaptive seating devices utilized on the busesReports damaged inoperable or missing equipment to the driverAssists the driver with maintaining the interior cleanliness of the bus to which they are temporarily assignedMonitor the students during the ride to ensure bus rules and regulations are followedReinforce railroad crossing regulations and assist driver with explaining and practicing bus evacuation proceduresAssists students with entering and exiting the bus and finding assigned seating positionsWorks in cooperation with staff at program sites serviced by that specific routeResponsible for completing student attendance logs on a daily basis as required and/or requested by a supervisorMaintains documentation of student behavior, completing discipline reports as required and/or requested by a supervisorImplement disciplinary actions when needed to ensure a safe rideAssist driver in preparing written bus safety reports for the purpose of keeping parents, schools and Transportation Department informed of disciplinary problemsPerform first aid/CPR when requiredMonitor and respond to physical, mental and emotional needs of all students being transported Monitors the well being of student passengersAttends to students during medical emergencies, for example, seizures or suctioningAssistants are responsible for maneuvering wheelchairs onto and off of lifts and secures the wheelchair with tie-downs on the bus. Works with school bus drivers providing assistance to them in performing their non-driving duties.Working ConditionsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and extreme heat, elevated noise levels.Physical DemandsThe work involves riding in a school bus. Typical positions require worker to be capable of climbing stairs, crawling, bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting at least 60 lbs. Occasionally required to push, pull or drag up to 60 lbs. Must be able to hold, grasp and turn objects; use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards; and feel the shape, size and temperature of objects. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.Employees in this category will also receive the following for the 2025-2026 school year:Non-Recurring Pay: 8% of base salary in Non-Recurring Pay (distributed as 4% on November paycheck and 4 % on May paycheck).Base Salary Setting: Employment, assignment and salary placement, is in accordance with job description requirements. A work history is required to demonstrate job title, job duties and time worked in the position. Grade placement for ESP positions is determined by the Salary Schedule by Job Title resource. Reference the linked How Your Compensation Is Determined for more details.Salary Setting (New Hires): Any newly-employed Education Support Professional will be placed on the twenty-five (25) step system. Each step represents two years of experience, based upon equivalent experience. The maximum number of years of experience granted is 19-20 years, which is equivalent to placement on step ten (10). Steps are determined by experience listed on the application and resume.Salary Setting (Rehires): Returning employees who have previously resigned or separated from the District will be rehired at the same step they were on at the time of resignation/separation plus any new experience gained in the same job, provided step increases were approved by the Board during the years in question.Employees with experience in the District who have left the District and then returned to the same position shall be hired at the same pay grade (refers to the ESP placement on salary schedule by job title) and step at time of resignation.
