UI/UX Web Designer

In this role, you'll contribute hands‑on to our UX and UI design efforts to create intuitive, engaging experiences that encourage people to donate effectively and significantly. Start date: Mid 2025, with a preference to start in May / early June Hours: Full-time or at least 80% part time Location: Remote, with a preference for candidates with European Time Zones Salary: Approximately $60,000- $90,000 USD (depending on experience and location, see here) Employment: Permanent employment with a 3-month probation period We believe great products come from a thoughtful design process combined with effective implementation. At GWWC, we value designers who can bridge the gap between concept and execution. As part of our Tech Team, you'll: Lead the design process—creating wireframes, prototypes, and high‑fidelity designs Work closely with our development team during implementation to ensure design integrity Contribute to front‑end implementation with HTML and CSS if it's in your skill set (not required, but valued) Collaborate with our content team to craft clear, compelling copy for interfaces—you understand that words are a critical part of good design Participate in 6‑week cycles following the Shape Up process Collaborate on projects from concept to completion—providing design direction, making key decisions, and seeing ideas through to implementation Balance work on both existing products and new initiatives, from our pledge platform to our donation tools This approach puts design expertise at the forefront while making it clear that coding skills are welcomed but not required. It maintains the Shape Up methodology and collaborative nature of the role while positioning it as design‑focused with implementation involvement rather than a do‑it‑all position. You'll collaborate closely with Fabio (Director of Tech), Sarah (Technical Product Manager), Lorenzo (Software Engineer), and our future Pledge Experience Product Manager, as well as the Marketing and Community & Partnerships teams depending on the project. Here are some projects you might work on: Redesigning the pledge journey to inspire more people to pledge Creating a new dashboard view that gives donors insights into their giving history Improving the accessibility of our donation platform Designing landing pages and new ways to showcase the impact of effective charities and our products, like the Pledge Page Implementing and maintaining a comprehensive design system to ensure consistency across all products Building new features to help pledgers track and celebrate their giving milestones Work closely with the Marketing team to administer UX improvements on our How Rich Am I Calculator and make it a more effective onboarding tool to effective giving Giving What We Can (GWWC) is working towards a world without preventable suffering or existential risk, where everyone is able to flourish. We do this by making giving effectively and significantly a norm among those who can. Founded in 2009, we are best known for the 10% Pledge, where nearly 10,000 people have committed to donating at least 10% of their lifetime income to highly effective charities. These 10% Pledgers and our broader community of pledgers are currently giving ~$50M USD to high‑impact charities each year. Many of them use GWWC’s own donation platform, through which we receive and process ~$40M USD in donations, including from non‑pledge donors, and grant to our supported programs. We are setting ourselves a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) of 1 million pledgers donating $3B USD to high‑impact charities annually. This would be roughly equivalent to 100x GWWC’s current scale. It could be achieved by 1% of the world’s richest 1% pledging and giving effectively and significantly. It would imply the equivalent of nearly 1 million lives being saved every year. The current ~13 FTE global team is hardworking and mission‑focused, with a strong commitment to both our team values and community values. In 2024, we launched a rebranded 10% Pledge and spun out from Effective Ventures to become our own legal entities in the US and UK. In 2025, we will start reaching new audiences and lay the organizational foundations for scale that will ultimately help us achieve our BHAG. GWWC is a fully remote company, and this is a remote job. We welcome applicants with at least 4 hours of overlap with Central European Time (CET), to ensure effective collaboration with our existing team. Our ideal candidate bridges the gap between design and implementation, creating beautiful interfaces that work seamlessly and websites that people love to engage with. Whether your background is primarily in design with some technical skills or in frontend development with a strong design eye, we're interested in talking with you. We recognize that not every candidate will have every quality listed and are committed to providing training and support for the right person. There are no formal requirements for specific previous experience for this position, however we expect that most candidates will have 2-5 years of professional experience Strong portfolio showing shipped product work, not just mockups or concepts Proficiency with Figma or similar design tools Good understanding of key concepts of web design like responsiveness, accessibility, usability, and information architecture Excellent copywriting skills — you care about how things are phrased as much as how they look. We see copywriting as part of the overall design Experience working with product teams and engineers through implementation cycles Self‑motivated and comfortable taking ownership of projects Alignment with GWWC's mission and team values Experience with HTML and CSS Experience with remote‑first work culture Familiarity with the Shape Up methodology Understanding of effective altruism and/or effective giving Acquaintance with design systems and component‑based approaches (we are using TailwindCSS and React) Our current salary calculator gives an approximate range of USD $60,000 – USD $90,000, depending on experience, seniority, and location (read more about how we think about compensation here). We have a preference for full‑time but are open to other arrangements.
