Qualifications:

1. Hold or be eligible for a Professional Student Support Certificate endorsed as a School Nurse, PK- Adult, or

2. Hold a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited higher-education institution, and

3. Hold a current valid West Virginia license as a Registered Nurse (RN), and

4. Successful completion of the on-line training for substitutes provided through WVU Department of Education and

5. Successful completion of requirements for authorization and / or certification through the West Virginia Department of Education as a Substitute School Nurse, and

Special Note: Candidates without full certification as a school nurse who are willing and eligible to obtain and maintain a temporary authorization will be considered if an insufficient number of fully qualified candidates apply. Candidates with an Associate's Degree and valid R.N. license will be considered if no candidates who apply possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree. Required substitute training costs will be reimbursed to qualified candidates employed by the school district upon successful completion of that training program.

Terms of Employment: As needed for the 2026-2027 school year and beyond.

Compensation: Per Tyler County Substitute Salary Schedules based upon degree levels, training, and experience.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Is available on-call to perform nursing duties during a short-term or long-term absence by the regular school nurse.

2. Implement school health services as outlined in the School Health Services Handbook, as directed by the West Virginia State Department of Education.

3. Assist school staff members with selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.

4. Consult with parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, health departments, and other agencies on school health and medical matters.

5. Observe students to detect health and medical concerns for the purpose of assisting students and families with health care issues.

6. Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or is experiencing an emergency or acute illness.

7. Visit students' homes when necessary.

8. Participate with school personnel in developing and implementing a system-wide health and wellness program including implementation of the Tyler County Health and Wellness Policy.

9. Contact homes of children upon referral from school principals.

10. Consult with school personnel on modification of students' educational programs to meet health needs of individual students as necessary.

11. Authorize exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.

12. Assist school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.

13. Participate in and deliver professional development and in-service programs as appropriate.

14. Communicate effectively with school personnel, students, and parents / guardians.

15. Attend Student Assistance Team (SAT) meetings when requested by the SAT Coordinator or Principal.

16. Comply with requirements of West Virginia Board of Education Policies 2422.7, Standards for Basic and Specialized Health Care procedures; 2422.8, Medication Administration; 2423, Communicable Disease Control Policy; and the Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedure Manual for West Virginia Public Schools.

Evaluation: Reports to, and is evaluated by school principals as specified in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310 for Professional Support Personnel.
