Data Center Optical Technician (Austin)

Grow with us! We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Center Optical Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in fiber optic cabling, decommissioning, break‑fix, migrations, network transport optical troubleshooting and remote hands services. Hardware replacement may be required, as well as racking and stacking equipment. The Optical Engineer will ensure the seamless operation of our customer’s data center facilities, providing top‑notch customer service and technical support. Location: Customer facilities in Austin, Texas area. Relocation not offered. Work authorization: Ericsson Inc. does not sponsor US work authorizations (H‑1B, O‑1, TN, F‑1 EAD). What you will do Cabling: Work in overhead racks or grids, pull long lengths of heavy cables. Handle, install, and troubleshoot Ethernet and fiber cables and connectors including CAT 5, CAT 6, structured cable, fan‑outs, single mode, multi‑mode, RJ45, LC. Optical Testing and Troubleshooting: Execute activities from project specification documents – routing, lacing, labeling, terminating, and local/remote testing. Use optical power meter, stabilized light source, VFL, OTDR, and test equipment to test 10/100G circuits with BERT, RFC2544, EtherSAM (Y.1564), iPerf. Analyze and resolve network issues related to equipment installations/removals. Perform card‑level troubleshooting with assistance from control centers or back‑office engineers. Break‑Fix: Work outside normal business hours, including nights and weekends, when needed. Remote Hands: In‑depth knowledge of data center equipment installation and basic testing methods and procedures (MOPs). Interpret vendor documentation, network practices, and engineering letters. Identify cable colors and equipment indicator lights. Follow detailed MOPs and engineering documents/diagrams. Site Audits: Review project specifications to validate equipment placement, cable assignments, and determine cable lengths. Document results in proprietary databases and provide timely feedback on audit/survey requests. Racking and Stacking: Install, organize, and maintain hardware equipment in data center racks following SOPs. Use hand and power tools. Learn and retain mechanical installation specifications. Documentation: Read and interpret cut‑sheets for physical network installation, ensuring accurate port connections and cable management. Oversee third‑party on‑site activities. The skills you bring Experience: 3–5 years as a technician in data center operations or similar environment, interacting directly with customers. Team‑lead experience preferred. Soft Skills: Self‑starter, independent work, team player, excellent interpersonal communication with customers. Strong organizational and administrative skills. Effective written and oral communication in English. Ability to multitask, remain composed under stress, think forward, and learn new concepts quickly. Follow safety standards. Coordinate with multiple departments to optimize scheduling, resolve roadblocks, and manage material deliveries. Use Hyperscale systems and applications for customer communication. Adhere to Hyperscale standards to meet quality requirements. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move heavy equipment up to 50 lbs. Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights.
