Job Description POSITION SUMMARY: The Ultrasound Technician is a graduate of an accredited AMA school and registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT), maintains a State License as a general radiographer, and/or is a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). The Ultrasound Technician is responsible for providing timely diagnostic services to both inpatient and outpatients under the direction of a Radiologist and departmental protocols. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: abdominal, pelvic, (gynecological & obstetrical), and transvaginal sonograms. Additionally is proficient at scanning small parts (thyroid, breast & scrotom) along with ultrasound-guided biopsies, drainage, thoracentesis, paracentesis and aspirations.

Primary responsibilities for an Ultrasound Technician encompass but not intended to be all-inclusive;
• Patient Rights - Demonstrating awareness and respect for the patient/family/significant others dignity and values; identifies cultural and religious needs, emotional and language barriers, physical, cognitive, psychological and educational limitations. Knowledgeable of patient's rights, advanced directives, consents, protection of patient security, privacy and confidentiality in all aspects of care.
• Assessment - Gathers data and observations in accordance with Hospital policy, standards and patient care needs as it relates to; Pain, risk to fall, skin integrity, interventions, signs and symptoms of abuse, changes in patients condition and identification of patient needs requiring intervention of other team members. Knowledgeable of documentation systems utilized to chart interventions, procedures and supply acquisition.
• Care of the Patient - Interpretation of all available patient data - to meet the identified patient care goals for an Ultrasound patient. Understands best methods to achieve optimal results in the form of scans, films and ultrasounds. Recognizes indications, contraindications and precautions for Ultrasound procedures. Demonstrates skill in the use of specialized equipment and devises used in Ultrasound Therapy. Able to recognize the need for and use of designated equipment in resuscitation efforts.
• Patient/Family Education - Provides patients with explanations of all procedures and treatments prior to providing care.
• Continuum of Care - Coordinates in meeting patient's care needs during transfer to other departments and upon discharge if applicable.
STANDARD VI - Age Specific Essential Performance Criteria
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned position.
