Eligible candidates must be permanent in the Investigator title or have passed the civil service exam (Exam No. 2083). INVESTIGATOR – 31105 Legal Bureau Overview The Legal Bureau serves as in‑house counsel to the Department, assisting members of service in interpreting local, state, and federal laws. The Bureau represents the Department in civil matters, produces records and video footage for litigation and oversight, negotiates contracts, and assesses policies and practices for legal conformance. Body‑Worn Camera Unit Responsible for evaluating legal issues related to body‑worn camera video releases to various outlets. Analyze and intake requests from the public and government agencies for NYPD body‑worn camera footage. Utilize NYPD systems and applications to process and investigate requests. Examine responsive footage, apply appropriate redactions and edits according to all applicable laws and Department policies. Report results of body‑worn camera video review to unit supervisors. Subpoena Litigation Unit Responsible for processing, reviewing, and responding to subpoenas, court orders, and motions for records served upon the Department. Analyze and intake subpoenas, court orders, and outside agency requests for NYPD records. Utilize NYPD systems and applications to process requests. Examine responsive records, apply appropriate redactions per applicable laws. Report results of searches and record review to unit supervisors. Minimum Qualifications Four‑year high school diploma or educational equivalent and two years of satisfactory, full‑time experience as an investigator evaluating credit worthiness, searching for assets, verifying educational and experiential qualifications, or performing investigations involving the research, compilation, or location of evidence; or Associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college; or Education and/or experience equivalent to options 1 or 2, with at least a four‑year high school diploma or equivalent. Preferred Skills Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a significant caseload while meeting deadlines. Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Knowledge of basic computer skills and Department systems (Subpoena Litigation Unit). Excellent analytical skills (Subpoena Litigation Unit). New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. City employees who have worked for the City for two continuous years may also be eligible to reside in certain counties.
