The Assistant Director supports the daily operations of the child care center while ensuring compliance with Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC) Child Care Licensing Minimum Standards and Texas Rising Star (TRS) requirements. This position assists with administrative duties, staff supervision, family communication, and classroom support. The Assistant Director is expected to work directly with children and assist in classrooms as needed to maintain appropriate teacher-to-child ratios and ensure high-quality care.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Leadership & Administration

• Assist the Director with the daily operation of the child care center.
• Help ensure compliance with Texas Child Care Licensing, CACFP, and Texas Rising Star standards.
• Support staff scheduling and classroom coverage.
• Assist with staff orientation, coaching, and ongoing professional development.
• Monitor attendance, enrollment, and required documentation.
• Maintain children's and employees' records in accordance with licensing requirements.
• Assist with incident reports, accident reports, and parent documentation.
• Help prepare for licensing inspections, TRS assessments, and monitoring visits.Communicate professionally with families and address concerns when appropriate.
• Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and staff information.
• Serve as Acting Director in the Director's absence.

Classroom Responsibilities

• Float between classrooms as needed to maintain required staff-to-child ratios.
• Provide direct supervision and care for children ages 6 weeks through school age.
• Implement developmentally appropriate learning activities.
• Support teachers with lesson plans and classroom management.
• Ensure classrooms remain clean, organized, and safe.
• Supervise indoor and outdoor activities.
• Assist with diapering, toileting, handwashing, and other personal care routines.
• Help serve meals and snacks following CACFP guidelines.
• Model positive guidance and appropriate behavior management techniques.
• Build positive relationships with children and families.

Health & Safety

• Ensure all health and safety procedures are followed.
• Monitor classrooms for cleanliness and licensing compliance.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies and accidents.
• Maintain current CPR and First Aid certification (or obtain upon hire).
• Report safety concerns immediately to the Director.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
• Previous experience in a licensed child care center required.
• Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
• Knowledge of Texas Child Care Licensing Minimum Standards.
• Knowledge of Texas Rising Star standards preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Must successfully pass all required background checks.
• Must meet all state training requirements.
• Pay is based solely on relevant qualifications and verified work experience.

Physical Requirements

• Lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
• Frequently bend, kneel, squat, and sit on the floor.
• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors.

Work Schedule

Hours will vary based on the needs of the center. This position requires flexibility and the willingness to assist in classrooms, administrative duties, and center operations as needed.

 

Employment Expectations

The Assistant Director is a hands-on, working member of the management team. This is not solely an office position. The individual is expected to assist in classrooms daily as needed, maintain required teacher-to-child ratios, work directly with children, support teachers, and actively participate in classroom activities. The Assistant Director will also support administrative responsibilities, maintain compliance, and help ensure the smooth operation of the center while providing quality care and service to children and families.
