Job SummaryAs the Director of Research Administration and Revenue Management within the Department of Medicine (DOM), this role holds a pivotal position, contributing expertise in financial analysis and strategic financial planning. Reporting directly to the DOM Associate Chair for Administration and the Associate Chair for Finance, the Director is a key member of the central administration senior leadership team entrusted with the following core responsibilities:Strategic Financial Analysis: The Director takes the lead in conducting advanced financial analysis, playing a crucial role in developing, interpreting, and implementing financial concepts. This involves in-depth financial planning, resource allocation, and budget control strategies to ensure the department's fiscal health. By employing financial modeling, trend analysis, and forecasting techniques, the Director provides invaluable insights that inform strategic decision-making at both departmental and campus levels.Strategic Leadership: the Director of Research Administration collaborates closely with the Associate Chairs for Research, the Chair, and other senior and executive leaders, both within the Department of Medicine and at the campus level. The Director contributes to the establishment of visionary strategic plans and objectives related to research. This role is pivotal in ensuring these strategies are effectively executed through subordinate managers and high-performing teams.Financial Management and Compliance: In this executive capacity, the Director holds ultimate responsibility for directing financial management, internal controls, compliance, and risk management pertaining to sponsored funding across all department sites, including the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Proactively assessing financial risk, the Director establishes robust systems and procedures to safeguard organizational assets. This includes identifying potential financial vulnerabilities, formulating risk mitigation strategies, and implementing policies that ensure financial compliance and resilience.Team Leadership: As the leader of a dynamic team of ten FTEs in the Department of Medicine and Co-leadership for another nine FTEs in the UCSF Office of Clinical Trials Activation, the Director must inspire excellence, foster collaboration, and drive the achievement of ambitious goals. Additionally, the Director’s advisory oversight of over 50+ finance and research administration staff employees across the Department is crucial in guiding their efforts towards optimal performance.Resource Allocation Expertise: Drawing on a deep understanding of financial analytics, the Director excels in resource allocation. This involves developing and executing resource allocation plans, optimizing the deployment of financial resources, and making data-driven recommendations for annual resource allocations and future requirements. The Director's ability to discern patterns and opportunities within financial data is instrumental in ensuring efficient resource utilization.Financial Communication and Advocacy: Excelling in financial communication, the Director bridges the gap between academic departments and central campus offices. By articulating complex financial insights in a clear and persuasive manner, the Director plays a pivotal role in advocating for the department's financial interests and fostering collaborative research endeavors.Enhancing Financial Productivity: The Director's strategic vision extends to enhancing financial productivity. Leveraging financial analysis, the Director actively collaborates with faculty providers and leaders to motivate and strategize the generation of Work Relative Value Units (wRVUs) per clinical Full-Time Equivalent (cFTE). This initiative is instrumental in generating the necessary funds to support Divisional operating budgets and advance innovative research projects.In this role, the Director's financial analysis expertise is a cornerstone for informed decision-making, fiscal responsibility, and the achievement of strategic financial goals. Through advanced financial modeling, astute resource allocation, and proactive risk management, the Director ensures the financial stability and growth of the Department of Medicine while championing the pursuit of groundbreaking research initiatives.The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The DOM has an annual budget of greater than $500M across three sites with over 2,000 employees. The DOM comprises 22% of all UCSF faculty, 26% of the SOM’s faculty, and 20% of the SOM budget.
